Default To hell with CD/DVD Players, j/k

Use one of these: http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/computing/5a98.shtml
I don't believe many of you would be interested in using one of these, but personally I'm looking into one. I don't, as of yet, own a honda, but will be purchasing one soon. I've considered the options of mp3/dvd/cd/mini disc players, but to get everything I want, this is as close as i've come, and frankly, i like it. Although 7" Lcd's don't exactly work for the average windows user, anyone who knows linux knows that this could be used as a powerful audio/visual tool. But if you went all out and found even a 12" monitor, this would be a very nice addition to your setup. I've considered it because, as many of us, we enjoy not only music, but movies, and mere visual stimulation. You could use this tool as a cd player, a dvd player, an mp3 player, a navigation tool (via data cd's or wireless internet connection), or many other things. Pardon if this sounds like a sales pitch, but i'm just trying to catch anyones eye who might be interested. Personally, I've always wanted the convienience of an mp3 player, but at the time a dvd player. Unfortunatey there aren't many combination head units, and this simplifies things (in a manner), and is much cheaper (factor in the unit itself, and a monitor, and wiring/power converters, as opposed to a $1500 Head Unit, a price off the top of my head). Anyway, on this thing you could watch dvds, play audio cds, watch divx movies (dvd rips or other, depending on the type of person), figure out where you need to go. And, is completely removeable with ease, depending on how you've mounted the thing in your car.
Although very cool in thought, obviously there'd be problems: a 12" Monitor isn't easy to hide. Having a keyboard and mouse aren't fun. Solvethe mouse problem via trackball, and the keyboard can be removed entirely if one were so inclined to venture into linux, and find a way to use a touch screen monitor, as an all in one 'player.' (trust me, as much as i hear of people spending cash on an entertainment system in their car, a little research and deveopment will definitely prove to be a nice alternative for those on a milder budget.
theft prevention, simply unplug the unit, it's not really much bigger than an old style minidisc player, and smaller than a laptop.

For the most part you should probably disregard this post. I'm just voicing thoughts in my head, merely to give others ideas. I woudln't expect an actual install of this nature to be easy, as, if any have been done, this is not a common install. Polive vehicles venture close to this kind of setup, but not the same manner, Most us actual laptops, and are meant for a passenger officer. A simple touch screen 'program' or 'operating system' would prove useful for the solo driver. Anoter point to take into effect: bootime. say you were to use windows? I livein houston, a fairly large city, and when i want to go somewhere, i'm in the car usually for more than 20 minutes. windows takes at least 2-3 minutes to boot. Then factor in all kinds of mouse clickity clicks and what not. It's probably not worth it. I would choose the linux route, and if managed correctly, boot time would be cut to less than 30 seconds. With a properly programmed/designed program, you could be playing your favorite movies/mp3s/dvds/cds in no time. As with any entertainment system in a car, you're going to be distracted, if you had a touch screen system, it'd be no less difficult than punching buttons on an actual cd player. A mouse and keybaord, that's another story.

Lemme know what you think. Obviously something like this would take time and planning. I right now do not have a car i would mod, nor the cash to do it, but with any great project comes time and planning, something i can manage for the time being. Input would be appreciated, even if it's a point to make about usefulness/unusefulness of an application like this. I've just seen so many different 'but i want this and this type statements (not this board, but throughout the sites and people i've discussed with). Anyway, thanks for the time, and i apologize for spelling/punctuation/capitalization/grammar errors,

PS: pardon if i tend to not make sense in parts of the post. I tend to wander from thought to thought as I type. A few ideas may seem to have been cut off or just went to nothing.
