Cooland Issue. Please Help!
I need help with my b16a swapped 93 DA. My coolant gauge goes crazy. On start up the gauge will gradually go up and then gets to half and the check engine light comes on and the needle goes back down. I cut the car off and on again and the check engine light goes off and stays off and the gauge reads nothing. Yes I am talking about the stock temp gauge inside the stock cluster. My question is: What could be causing this? and How do I test the thermostat, the ECT sensor and if needed the gauge inside the cluster? Any info on this subject would help greatly. And the only reason that I don't just start replacing everything is because I am broke.
There are 3 temperature reading devices on our cars.
1) ECT switch. This is on the t-stat. It turns on the radiator fan when the coolant reaches ~180deg F. It's a simple resistive switch.
2) ECT gauge sending unit. This is for the temperature gauge reading on the cluster in your dash. The sending unit is kinda close to the exhaust cam cap near the dizzy.
3) ECT sensor. This sends coolant temp data to the ECU. It's located right next to the sending unit on the IM side (as opposed to the header side)
