I want 200WHP from my D16Y8 with a turbo. What's needed to hold the power?
I can't get a straight answer anywhere, just that certain parts won't hold at 200WHP. TDC said $4,000 would buy me a built engine to hold approximately 400WHP but this is gonna be my daily, and I don't want a 400WHP daily, it'll just be too troublesome IMO.
So what won't hold and what will I need for 200WHP reliably?

Headstuds arent really nessesary for 200whp even on a D. i tuned several d16 vtecs with just over 200whp and 200wtq on completely stock engines.

The next car I throw absurd amounts of money at will be an LS1. No offense, and I sincerely mean that, but going fast in a Honda isn't my idea of efficient. I mean, I got respect for a fast Honda (a fast anything actually), but it's not the route I prefer to go.
Now with that said, I really only care about my 200WHP, and only 200WHP. I don't wanna build it for 300 or more because it honestly will never see it, at least not in my possession. I just want a modest 200WHP so when my commute gets boring I can make it somewhat interesting.
So a healthy motor, good tune and maybe head studs?

I'm probably gonna upgrade my exhaust anyway, but can I get by with the stock stuff for awhile? And what about a bigger fuel pump? Remember, no more than 200WHP (or really whatever it dyno's at), but nothing serious.

Complete turbo kit, injectors, manifold (if not included with TK), fuel pump, clutch, and some type of engine management. Is that about it? And what about exhaust?

Build it properly and maintain it and it will last forever. Don't and you can roll the dice on your build.
Understandable, but there's a point where too much power is just that, too much power. What is that level on a healthy, otherwise stock motor? Because 240WHP doesn't sound safe.
We've established that. 200hp for a D-series engine. The build you're looking at is for a B-series.
I used to have a 99 coupe dx (d16y7) non-vtec. I had a kit that I put together using a log manifold, 14b turbo, ..... It made 196whp @ 10psi. Drove the car for over 1 year without any issues. The motor was 100% oem.

This sounds ideal! What kind of times did it run in the 1/8th on this setup, or did you even track it?
i think 6 months only, he got bit by that boost bug bad so he bought that built block, he didnt blow his stock y8 though
i didnt think it would last either then my other friend with his made 280whp i think, mightve been 320whp, on his y8 but then he cracked ringlands in one piston trying to go higher. they didnt care about their motors much
but they were pushing limits of course, i wouldnt go higher than 200whp personally but im a bit conservative and have no money

You have a d series. Your also wanting around 200 hp. You say it will never see more than that in your possesion... are you completely bent on going turbo? If not consider this:
A decent reliable turbo setup is going to cost you anywhere between 2k and 3k dollars brand new.
A motor swap would be between 1k and 2k.
Why not do a k series or gsr swap and with an intake, exhaust, header, and tune be at that level for alot cheaper? Just my .02 unless your planning on going the dreaded ebay route like the countless other half asser's out there.
If I could do a K-swap for $3k I would have. Show me where to get those and I'll buy them all day for $1-2k. I think you're smoking something. Especially in Tenn because the "scene" is not that big here and parts seem to be scarce and expensive.

No doubt. My argument for not going swap is that I don't care about the expandability. Another reason for boost over a swap in my case is it'd take at least $2k (being very conservative) more for the same power out of a swap as I'd spend on getting the 200 from a turbo (I would need a build B16 or bolt-on H22/K20).
I'll consider my goal a success if I can get out without spending more than $3k.

I'm on the same boat, I would like around 200HP in my EX. My budget is under 4 Grand. I would like to get another engine, being that mine is at almost 200,000. I'm having trouble deciding which engine to put in. I just want a reliable car with some kick in it, nothing crazy. My mechanic tells me to stay with this motor, but I don't know how much abuse a 200,000 engine can take, and as for longevity, I just feel more secure with a engine with 50-70,000 miles on it than a engine with 200,000. Let me know what you decide to do.
