Misterious Metel smashed my piston & head
I have a JDM B16A, the bottom has about 50k on it, the head is built, with rev hi-comp flat valves, dual coil springs, retainers, ferrera valve guides, locks, & seals, the head has been shaved, port polished and has a 3 angle job on it as well. running stock b16a vtec cams, with a stock jdm b16a intake manifold and throttle body, with a password jdm cf whale ***** intake.
I started the car up and sounded like it had a rod knocking, shut the car off, and had it toed home, ran the motor a little bit trying to figure out where the noise was coming from, we determind that the noise was in the head and from cyl 3, we took the head off, and all the parts seem in perfect shape, nothing borken or missing. i have dome pistons and on the sides it was all banged up, as well as on the cylinder head, all banged up. On the cylinder head there were chunks of metal still stuck in it, the metal is magnetic which means its metal, not alumi. my roomate said it could be the rings, i took out the piston and rings are still intact and in good shape, cylinder walls are smooth and not damaged ither. i took brake fluid and put on the inside of the head to see if there were any leaks from bent valves, and brake fluid didn't leak out. oh and it's not spark plug, spark plugs were intact and fine...
Any idea what or where this metal could have come from?....
Heres a Pic of the damaged piston and part on the cyl head, you can see some of the chunks still in the cyl head.
Thanks...for any help...or ideas, cause we can't figure it out...

those metal bits do look strange...i can't tell what they are from....does someone hate you? maybe someone put something into your intake?
yeah we can't figure it out...
they would have to open break into the car and open the hood then take off the intake to do that, and i have an alarm...besides that happend when i was at work and they have security and cameras....

thats what i'm trying to figure out?....the meterial is metal, it stuck to a magnet, which everything in the head that i know of isn't metal, it's aluminum...
u sure the plugs were fine? sounds like you were doing work(or driving with no filter) in a meteor shower...lol have you changed anything?plugs?intake?filter?injectors? is the material itself magnetic(stick to other metal) or just ferrous(sticks to magnet)? just asking to maybe figure out what kind of metal it is... how long after u did head job this happened? right after?
yes i'm sure the plugs are fine, there currently in my gsr, and car is running fine, i haven't taken the filter off the cf pwjdm intake sence i've had it, and the intake has been on for ever, nothing has been changed, as far as the metal, it will stick to a magnet but doesn't stick to other metals....and had the head job done prooble about 3-4 yrs ago...

there still there, and even if they wornt how would those big bolts go through the im, then through the head, there would be more damaged, only thing that was damaged was the bottom of the head, and the pistons...
The pieces all look to be somewhat square. Id pull the the 2 cam caps off on the dizzy side and look the camshafts over really good, also pull the dizzy and check the two tabs that slide into the cam. Slim but possible for one to break and bounce around in the head.
Yeah that would never make it that far, not sure what I was thinking.
It would have to come from the intake or exhaust then drop in from the valve.
Is the valve cover vented to the intake or do you run a breather?

is there a valve guide broken? ive seen a head that had previoulsy had bent valves that someone just swapped new valves in and turned out that the exposed end of the guide was cracked and was ready too fall off... worth a look
Check your throttle body butterfly to see if that broke apart, it would have to be something from the intake or manifold.

valve guides are ferrera guides, there gold, this metal is more like a silver gunmetal color, i'll be checking more into it this weekend, on my day, off, i work 12hr shifts from 6-6pm, so i don't have that much time to work on it durring the day, but i'll check everything out this weekend and post a reply as soon as i know more...and i'll check all the things all of you posted...

awww man i have the same embedding on the bottom of my one head that got trashed only mine was wayy worse it thrashed those little itty bitty peices threw all my clyinders from the one and sucked into all the others lol in the matter of seconds my money is one those peices being your valve seats pull your vavles out of the head and check them out.
ok, so i checked everything, the butterfly off the throttle body is fine and intact, notthing came off the intake manifold that i can see, the distributor is fine none of the pieces broke off, still can't figure out where the pieces came from....
filter is just mesh, no metal, and as far as taking out the valves, i haven't done that, plan on taking it to a machine shop so they caan fix the damage on the head....
i've already seen videos online of much worse being fixed and already talked to the machine shop about fixing it...they can do it, and theres some thats are far much worse then mine, mine is mild compared to others...
