Default 97 CLUTCH AND TRANS REPLACEMENT

WAS WONDERING HOW DIFFICULT IT MAY BE TO REMOVE THE TRANNY. WILL I HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE? IM THINKING THAT I WANNA TRY TO GET IT REBUILT BEFORE SPRING ROLLS AROUND... WITH THE TRANS REMOVED, I MIGHT AS WELL REPLACE THE CLUTCH SINCE IT STARTING TO SLIP. ANY BRAND SUGGESTIONS OR TIPS TO KNOCK BOTH OUT AT ONCE...

You do not have to remove the engine, it will cost you more to get the trans rebuilt than to just buy another one. So I would just buy one. Get an Exedy OEM replacement. Do you have any mechanical skills? If not, pay someone else to drop the trans.

yea i have some mec. skills. i work with motorcycles 7 days a week and i try to do all my own work. ive also worked at a plant disembling honda trannys, but that was years ago. Never removed a trans clutch on a car. A m/c clutch is pull out and slide in pretty much. Same in a car trans?

It takes me about 1-2hrs to remove a trans. About the same to reinstall. By myself. On a lift or on the ground. It's easy. Its alm just nuts and bolts. Ask specific questions or search specific questions when you run into an issue.

Whats wrong with your trans that you want a rebuild? And is this a LS? GS? GSR? ITR?

The clutch bolts on and so does th flywheel. You will need a 12pt. (6pt. Wont work) 10mm and 17mm socket. I use an impact. Or you can put a breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt and wedge it into the suspension to hold the motor.

Flywheel bolt torque is 76lbs. Clutch cover bolt torque is 18lbs. Prior to install, clean the bolts and holes with brake clean. Do NOT apply threadlocker. No matter what the "parts pro" behind the counter says. Torque them by hand.

Buy an exedy stock replacement clutch on eBay. They are cheaper than junk *** parts store replacements. And much better quality. Get an exedy stage 1 if you want a more aggressive clutch.

Buy a good quality high temp grease for the throw out bearing slide dealy, the clutch splines, & the clutch fork. Torque all the bolts by hand. This prevents them from being over tightened and hard to remove in the future.

DO NOT use a picklefork to get the ball joint apart on the front suspension. Undo just the lower ball joint to remove the axle. DO NOT pull on the axle. Not even a little bit.

THANKS FOR THE TIPS B. IM ASSUMING ITS AN LS TRANS. REASON I WANT TO REBUILD IS DUE TO 3RD GEAR. IT'LL GRIND GOING IN AND IF IM NOT HOLDING IT IN OR ACCELERATING, IT'LL POP OUT. IM THINKING I CAN JUST KILL 2 BIRDS WITH ONE STONE WHILE I HAVE IT OUT YA KNOW. THANKS FOR THE REPLIES EVERYONE.

disagree with this part. blue threadlock, especially the gel causes no damage, is easy to bust off with an impact BUT helps to prevents vibration loosening. i've actually had a properly torqued flywheel come loose before.

depends on what you can afford. the itr box is the best of the bunch but as stated, even the gsr box is a step up from the ls.

all depends on condition, i know a lot of people do it but it would never want to buy a used transmission unless i could drive it or the seller was very reputable.

average going price for a problem free gsr box is $400

average price for a problem free itr box is 800-1000

The GSR trans is a good match for the LS. I was going to install a B16 trans in my 2001 RS daily driver...because...IDK why. But the B16/ITR gearing on a B18B would be a little short/anoying for street driving.

The way I see it, the Integra GSR should have come with a B16 trans, the LS should have come with a GSR trans...and the LS trans should have never existed.

I'm the #1 GSR trans hater for B series VTEC motors. But for the LS, I think it's a great match.

Any 94-01 hydro B series trans will work.

Also....don't use gear oil in your trans. If your buddy did, that might be why his trans didn't last 10k miles. It seems to be a common mistake to use gear oil for whatever reason. Honda MTF works really well, I find.

and i really like my stage 1 exedy clutch and their 9.5 lb flywheel. its on the stock ls trans with 150k miles and it feels really good. i think it took me two days maybe 4 hours each day. and that was only the second time I separated trans and motor. i dropped the trans on my civic to replace the clutch as well as the axles and took me about 5-6 hours to do. it got easier needless to say

the only issue with these is the price. a lot of the jdm gsr lsd transmissions use a viscous lsd and cost damn near the same as an itr.

ITR ratios are a bit too much for LS motors, IMO. Unless it's a track car or something. I was up to my neck in desirable transmissions like a week ago lol. I sold errthang. I had a crazy silly gumby mint GSR trans for sale. Oh well. I wouldn't have been into shipping it anyway.

Also, if this isn't going to see track time, the LSD really isn't THAT important.

eh, true

shipping these is easy though, they still go via fed ex. strap to a piece of 1/2 plywood the same size as your box, drop plywood in thick cardboard box, slap fed ex sticker, ship.

I'd rather just use the clutch tool. So much easier than eyeballing the clutch and hoping the splines will line up.

if you're not using an alignment tool, how do you hold the disc center while you tighten the pressure plate bolts though?
