1990 b18a1 Acura Integra Won't Start
Hey guys! I have a 1990 teg with a b18a1 5speed that won't start for me.
I can turn the key and get dash lights and the radiator fans kick on, but the starter won't engage. I can push start the car and it will run fine.
At first I thought it was the starter, so I had it tested and the guy said that it was still working great. Then I checked the battery just to make sure I had enough juice, there was plenty.
I've checked the positive and negative contacts on the starter and I have juice where I need it. I also checked the clutch button just to make sure it wasn't jammed. All of the fuses are fine too.
Any suggestions?

yes it's for civic's but same deal with the integra aswell (think the plug might be a different colour)
once you find out what code it is, search for it or post what number it was here

yup thats normal.. do you have a multi meter? does your battery have the correct voltage for the starter... im not sure what it is, but other motor's ive worked on it's 12.6v

There is a little LED light on the ecu that will blink a certain amount of times (slow and fast blinks) to tell you code. Check your grounds, and clean them and the surface they touch. Do you have a test light? Check for power at the wire connecting to the starter solenoid as you have someone turn the key. Also just because the clutch safety switch botton works doesn't mean it is working.
Does the starter click when you turn the key? If not, it is your ignition switch.

FCM should be in here soon, he will tell you in full detail how to test every little electrical circuit and such to narrow it down to the culprit.
don't know why you wanna check for codes. the starter circuit won't throw any as the pcm doesn't monitor it.
also not sure what you mean by: I've checked the positive and negative contacts on the starter and I have juice where I need it.
there is no negative contact. the starter motor grounds through the transmission case and ultimately, the chassis ground. you mean you have battery voltage to the motor?
and with the key in start position, battery voltage at the solenoid?
first thing you wanna try is a bypass jump of the starter motor. just take a small piece of wire and jump the solenoid to the motor. make sure the car is not in gear when you do this. if the starter doesn't crank, since it tested good, check and clean your chassis ground.
if it does crank with the jump, the problem is either the connection at the solenoid, the clutch interlock switch, starter relay or ignition switch. or any wiring between them

Okay, so I did a bypass jump of the starter and it did nothing but spark when it made contact with the motor. Then I checked the chasis ground and cleaned. I still have nothing.
Is there a possibility of the ignition switch being bad still?

to correctly do the bypass jump, you just want to use a small piece of 18 gauge or so wire, connect it to the starter solenoid signal terminal (small one) and run that to the starter motor B+ power cable terminal (big one). make sure the car is not in gear when you do this.
if the starter still doesn't crank, all that's left to check/clean is the transmission to chassis ground, chassis to battery ground, connection of the B+ power cable at the starter, starter solenoid lead connection, and battery terminals and posts.
if those are all good, and the battery has adequate voltage, the starter is bad

I did a successful bypass jump. The starter engaged and I almost had a heart attack.
I bypassed the clutch safety switch and it still didn't work, so I strongly believe it is somewhere in the ignition switch or the wiring between.
Will give an update as soon as I make progress.

had this problem same car same year engine....etc it was my "main relay" under the dash, i didnt read everything on here so u might of checked that already GOODLUCK
I have a 90 b18 integra with this same issue. jumped the solenoid and it starts. Ive bypassed the clutch switch and it didnt work. Read multiple things about it possibly being the main relay but this forum says the main relay isnt part of the ignition system? is this ture or could it be my problem? I dont know a whole lot about ignition systems but sounds like an ignition switch is a huge pain to replace.
