Default is this why honda went to 5-lug for the R?

"2002-09-07 Spoon Sports/Inline Four TOR competed in NASA's 2.5 hour endurance race at Willow Springs International Speedway. Although TOR competed, TOR was unable to finish due to 3 broken wheel nuts while going 130+ mph on turn 8. "

Dumb Question

What exactly is the reason for extended studs?
What do they do?
And how would thye and open lugs help in this situation?

I was mostly kidding but most cars running slicks will have extended studs because many times its in the rules for 'race' cars and you need to have open lugs to fit over the extended studs.

Doubt they would've helped, unless they were made from a stronger metal or being longer would help distribute some of the weight on 'em. *shrug*

I understand you were kidding, and that it is the rules when you go below a certain ET. But my question is WHY?

If they make it a rule, they must have a reason....what is the reason?

doubt it My thinking is becuase after '97 there were no Honda 4 lug 11" brake setups they could bolt right up to make production of an ITR/CTR with off-tha'shelf parts easy

Those brakes look sorta small...I'd imagine that they'd be just a little bit larger for the type of racintg T.O. does...

wow...that is nuts.....like someone said earlier, 5 lugs disperse torque a little better, but, why haven't i ever seen that happen to a itr, or other 5 lug suspensions

i personally dont think the speed and turning alone did it...

maybe a little loose or vibration?

something else maybe..but the again...

willow turn 8-9 are pretty fast

I'm sure R's also have heavier duty hubs than their counterparts, which will also take the heat/stress better. Neons had a big problem with their hubs dying and the R/T or whatever versions had better hubs and no extra lug. :D

Kind of looks like they didn't tighten them down tight enough when they pitted for tires.
