Default 1997 gs-r timing adjustment help

ok so my gf bought a 1997 gs-r and its running rough. also it takes a little while to start, i went to attempt to adjust the timing on it but cant find any timing marks. i have also found that its not the stock motor in it. it has a b18a1. can anyone help me with this? im not a honda/inegra person i am a subaru nut so all of this is new to me here are pics of the motor, timing pully and engine code

^^ Eric the car guy FTW!

Do a valve lash adjustment too while your at it.

But that's good **** dude, you don't even know what you've got there, and it's a nice *** LSVTEC. BTW those are aftermarket adjustable cam gears.

The only thing that sucks is that it was someone elses build so you don't know if they cheaped out on the bottom end, or if it's fully built. For all you know it's fully forged internals with a build head.

Please get rid of those red wire looms lol. That thing will look so clean without them.

yes it still has the lower timing cover on it. and whom ever did the mods cut the upper timing cover to keep the gears exposed.

i would honestly gladly trade some one for the stock motor ecu and harness. if i would have known it had a swap i probably wouldnt have bought it. but im learning i suppose i just need it to be running top notch because its my girls daily driver

that's probably not a bad idea, because LS vtec isn't very reliable unless built properly

Oregon is a state yes. And as far as subaru brat/brumbys there are quite a few out here but they are sadly dwindling away. And I have seen that video several times I've never really been fond of that particular brat. I like offroading more then speed

Seeing how dirty that bay is the marks are probably covered in dirt, grime, and grease.

I have cleaned it since the photo to try and locate the marks and still no site of them. Could they have possibly changed the crank pulley to something withought the marks? In which case how then can I time it

That turbo is too big for a stroked wrx engine? You are sadly mistaken.

As long as it is a factory harmonic balancer it should still have timing marks. I haven't looked at my VTEC head in a while, but I know the LS head and cams have holes in them right before the cam gears that line up when cyl1 is at TDC, and you keep them in place with small punches or even drill bits lol.

Like I said though, I haven't looked at my GSR head recently so I don't remember if VTEC heads have them or not. I actually don't think so. But worth finding out.

Jack the car up, turn the crank by hand and find the marks, then mark them with chalk or nail polish or something.

Its really hard to see actually, if its stock you should see a white line then some space about a centimeter or so, then three marks, with the middle one marked pink.

It should look like this:
