Default Replacing the Head Gasket

Hey guys I've got a blown head gasket on my 91 Accord EX, I'm planning on changing it out this weekend. Just wondering if I should use permatex on the head gasket itself or will the gasket be enough by itself? Any other info on this head gasket change would be greatly appreciated.

No, just use the gasket. If you do it right you won't have any issues.

Oil the bolts, and go get a high quality tap and chase the threads on the head bolt holes until it comes out clean.

When you blow your head gasket you need to make sure both the block and head are within specs or the new head gasket is only going to get you about a month tops before it gives again.

If the head's not in specs you need to have it machined. If it's the block then just replace the engine. Check it when you pull the head and see if it's worth it to mess with it.

You will need a precision straight edge.

Thanks for the info...I never heard of oiling the bolts??? I had always thunk they were supposed to be china cabinet clean.

I would also strongly suggest sending the head out to be checked and machined if needed. This isn't the kind of job you want to do twice.
