Default Tire Choices.

I'm in the market for new tires for the R and I'm looking for something affordable, yet decent. I'd like to know if anyone has experience with the following makes...

Yokohama AVS ES100
Kumho Ecsta Supra 712

Both are in the same price range as the infamous Falken Azenis Sport ($60 to $80).

My use of the car is daily driver with occassional weekend trips for HPDE, few autocrosses and the rare drag strip appearance. On average, the car does 2 to 3 days of "spirited driving" per month, so I don't plan on big $ tires. The tires will go on the stock wheels.

Thanks for any constructive input...

Thanks for the replies, but other than Willard's experience with the Yokohama's, does anyone have experience with these Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's?

I'll make up my own mind, but I like advice form those who have actually used these...

They work fine when they are new or have reasonable tread. I'm at the wear bars and they tend to hydroplane in anything more then a light shower. But that is to be expected of any tire. I got great life out of my set. 8K miles, 7 track days and 12+ autocrosses. Great value for the money and I'll have another set next spring.

Traction is imporant. Nothin like some 33"s on the R to put your power to the ground.

I haven't tried Yoko ES100, but I had Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's for ~10,000 miles on my daily driver (at the time). Factoring in overall dry and wet performance, price, and autoX, it's the best value out there. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for all-season (sans snow & ice), do-it-all tire at such low price. Sure, it's not the best dry tire, it's not the best wet tire, but overall performance-per-dollar is solid.

My recommendation: If you daily drive your car through dry & wet & in a budget, get Kumho 712's. Then, when money comes along, get a set of rims + Azenis or S-03 or whatever for dry weather setup.

i have the Kumho 712's on my R. They do pretty well for daily driving, dry and wet. But I did use them for autocrossing a couple of weeks ago, and i didn't like them at all. They're pretty new, but i'm already thinking about ordering some azenis to replace them.

most street tires with a stiff *** sidewall will be heavy.
i hear the SO-3's are heavy...cost more..but
last a hell of a lot longer...and do WELL in the rain..
and have GREAT dry traction.

Azenios are a great cheap, but good performing tire. I would prefer over the 712s.

If you're looking to spend a bit more, try S03s or some Toyo T1S.

kuhmos suck on dry and wet. (from experience)
azenis is terrible in the rain.
