Hey guys. Blew my head gasket and so I'm tearing the engine apart. Definitely the most involved car repair I've ever done. Here's some pics:







To get this thing off, I just need to remove the crank pulley and the timing belt. Hopefully I can get this thing wrapped up in a few more days! I don't have air tools so I'm planning on trying the 5th gear big *** breaker bar method to get the pulley off. Just thought I'd share. Hope you like the pics!

 

Can't you just loosen to tensioner and slide the timing belt off the cam gear? Maybe even do one better, loosen it, zip tie the belt to the cam gear, and take the cam gear off of the cam shaft. I haven't done this on any d-series, but I can't see where it would be an issue

Looks like Cyl. #3 has a small amount of oil in the port. Make sure to inspect valves and the head for issues.

 

Is that oil or carbon from unburnt fuel?

 

It may be raw fuel (depending on how long it has been sitting there). It looks more like oil residue to me, OP can you confirm?

 

Yeah it's oil.

 

You don't need to remove the crank pulley, unless you want to replace the belt.
Which I would.

Did you mark the distributor ears before you remove it? It would still be a good idea to check/set the ignition timing.
