Fluctuating Idle on cold start 94 RS B18B1
so when i changed my oil in my teg my car started revving between 1500-2000 rpm
the car prior to this had not had an oil change for a LONG time when i drained it it was pure Black the oil filter is not even made anymore it was sucked onto the motor
now everytime i start my car it will fluctuate till warm
i doubt the car had any maintenance done on it that was routine so a vlave adjustment falls out of place.
i am going to be doing a valve adjustment is it possible that an adjustment would fix the problem
Already cleaned the TB and all the sensors has new plugs and plug wires

there isnt any vaccum leaks
i checked the valve clearences today and they need to be adjusted for sure
but i know its not a vaccum thing because it did it first when i changed the oil than stopped for a week now did it again i checked the hoses but ill check again to be sure

I only mentioned valve adjust because I've seen wacky things happen when valves are out of spec. ALso, he said no maintenance, so it wasn't a bad idea. Like I said double check lines, that's the most likely thing, something slightly loose when you changed the oil. Otherwise, since you want to do all around maintenance, clean the fitv/iacv. Get some good plugs and wires and maybe a cap rotor too, just to know all the tune up has been done.

it is possible that the iacv is faulty. though it does sound more like issues with the fitv, since you say it idles fine when warm
another possibility is the coolant temp sensor. you can test resistance of it, first cold, then hot. see if it falls within spec

If it's an intermittent problem then it is most likely a sensor or valve (iacv) problem.
Does this ALWAYS happen? Does the idle only change when you turn your lowbeams on? My idle fluctuates when I stomp on the brake or turn on my headlights (alternator draws power and adjusts idle). It could possibly be something electrically connected?
My girlfriends car does the same thing and I really wonder what it is. =(

try checking the code(s). even though the cel may not be illuminated, a code may still be stored. when it's acting up, use a multimeter and check resistance of the coolant temp sensor.
it could even be a bad o2 sensor. which would likely throw a code

Sorry, missed the part about the wires. Just said cleaned TB, didn't know if you included those two things in that. Definitely do an adjust, coolant been bled?
i just replaced the clutch on my ctr and now it does the same thing. but once its warm and idle is steady i can give it a little throttle and it'll jump around for a few seconds. i have a feeling we're both having problems with the iacv. isn't there an adjustment screw on the iacv though? like on the back side where the connector is? i cant see back that far underneath the thing.
something else i noticed too was when my idle is steady its at 1200. i know thats high but could that make the iacv jump around like its doing? i've got an old iacv off my d series i'm gonna try this weekend.
i haven't messed with that screw but i did adjust the throttle plate stop under the linkage. that was my original idle problem. i'll see how it reacts to that change.
