Beej's '91 Civic Hatchback
Hey everyone. I've been in the "Honda scene", if you want to call it that, for about 4 or 5 years now. The first Honda I began modifying was a 1997 Honda Accord LX, which was totaled 9 months after I got it by hitting a deer.
With the insurance money I purchased a 1999 Honda Civic EX. I've been working on the '99 for about three years and among other things, swapped a bad d16y8 in for a good one (less than 40k miles), had dents fixed, Type R style lip, PW:JDM fenders with lights added (wired and tucked driver side headlight harness myself), cleaned up the interior a bit and had the whole car repainted Honda R81.

I'm happy with the car and had my build thread up at www.jdmuniverse.com (not sure what happened to them). I've always been asked why I didn't put a B series in it and the reply was always that if I were going to go through the trouble, I'd prefer to do it in my dream car...a 4th generation Honda Civic Hatchback.
Well, now I've got one, as well as a B series engine (B18a1, sorry, no meaningful internal work or turbo planned at this point, ho-hum), so welcome to my build thread.
Here is the foundation...

As well as the B18a1...

I've recently ordered...
Innovative Mounts conversion shift linkages
Innovative Mounts motor mounts
Innovative Mounts radiator stay
Innovative Mounts replacement crossmember (will be changing order to competition bar)
Koyo half size radiator (will be changing order to PW:JDM dual core radiator)
PW:JDM shift linkage bushings
And intend on purchasing some used Function & Form Type 1 coilovers this week
Anyhow, I intend on documenting and posting as much as I can including the maintenance done to the engine before installation and the conversion from DPFI to MPFI and OBD0 to OBD1. Wish me luck (I'll need it!) and I hope this thread entertains and informs!
p.s. If you have any parts or advice you think I might need, feel free to share.

I purchased the hatch for $250. Blown motor, but completely unmolested which is good news for the wiring I have to do. I do believe the car has quite a but of rust.
I've got a shell of a '91 si with a load of rust, but I'll be swapping the si interior into this hatch.
I plan on doing some wire tucking as well.
Hopefully will end up being a simple and well put together build.

being that both cars are 90-91 body style, unless you want to tackle the mpfi swap i'd suggest doing what i did and just swap the front body harness and engine harness from the si into your current hatch. looks like a good start though
Unfortunately the si shell has all the wiring stripped from it. I've been studying dpfi to mpfi directions and wiring diagrams for about 2 weeks now. I'm fairly confident I can pull it off (famous last words?).
^^^^Agreed taking your time sucks until the end hahaha. But I bet you'll still be able to burn the tires off that thing with the b18a1. I love my ls motor.
I sure don't plan on rushing. The only goal I have at this point is that I was invited to a local-ish meet the first weekend in June. I'd like to take both Civics down. We'll see what happens. At this point I've spent about 8 to 10 hours studying wiring diagrams and directions for the conversion(s). Once I've got the dpfi to mpfi done I'll be purchasing a jumper harness for the obd0 to obd1 most likely.

I was able to get my order switched to the Innovative Mounts competition bar, Password jdm dual core aluminum radiator, and Innovative Mounts radiator brackets. I have been assured these parts will work together, I will only need to fab my own radiator stay. Parts should begin arriving next week.
I'll look into it, I may want to keep it as a back up. Password:JDM appears to no longer stock the fenders with holes for sidemarkers, so might have to make my own.
The crank pulley (harmonic balancer) on the b18a1 has some pretty ugly chips in it. I'd like to replace, would it be worth it to look into something aftermarket? I don't want to do the N1 CTR crank pulley as the engine is not balanced etc. Anyhow, anybody have any insight into this?
we really are starting out pretty much the same haha. and also my first honda was also a 1997 honda accord LX! lol what a coincidence.
i'd just go oem on the harmonic balancer. nice beggining of a build though man sub'd for future updates

Some more pictures of parts going in/on eventually, sorry for the poor quality...
Si seats, will get the upholstry fixed, obviously

Rear disc break conversion

Brand new-ish

Not pictured, Si rear seats, brand new hood. My order of Innovative Mounts and Password:JDM stuff should begin shipping later this week. Also, a co-workers son works at Advanced and I'm using his 20% discount to purchase the maintenance pieces for the b18a1, I should be getting a quote tomorrow for the following:
water pump
timing belt
alternator
alternator belt
b18a1 axles (92 Integra LS)
spark plugs
Possibly a few other things that I'm forgetting right now. Hope to get started tearing into the hatch soon, more pictures as things progress.
Yeah I saw your post on the other guys build thread hahaha....good deal man. I was about to say you could go to the junkyard and pick one up for next to nothing. What tranny are you gonna be running with?
Well the reason I ask is because some Integra's had the option to come with the YS1 tranny. My friend wanted a B18 so we went to the junkyard and picked the best looking one there and halfway through the engine pull he noticed it had the YS1 tranny. And we were kindda baffled because the car was completely stock and well taken car of as if a older person had owned it. So we kindda thought it was maybe a tranny swap but after some research we found out that apparently some Integra's were optional for the YS1. He picked up the engine and tranny under 300 bucks.....we put it in and it runs completely fine. The odometer on the car itself had a about 150 something. But what I'm getting at is you may wanna keep your eyes on the look out for a Y1 or YS1 tranny, they're geared kindda low. I know my friends B18a1 with the YS1 is a awesome combo. It'll burn through third.
If you were looking at it as if it were sitting in the engine bay look on top of it. Then all the way closest to you (standing in front of it) on the top should be a stamp. You may have to wipe some oil, dirt and grease off to see it. It'll be on a flat surface.
Not sure if I saw the right stamp, but it said "YSK" (with an oval around it) then a "1" next to it.
EDIT: Unless you're talking about the sticker. If you're talking about the sticker, its gone.
