Help car throws flames out of exhaust!!!
Alright fellas...well it isn't an ITR but it's a prelude. It's my little bros cars. The car has had some track time and minor mods.
The car is a 2001 SH model with:
-N1 catback exhaust
-AEM CAI
-Air/Fuel gauge
And that's it for the engine mods. the other mods are just suspension mods.
Anyway the car will throw out a flame right when VTEC is engaged. The car seems to run fine, feels strong and feels normal. Although when accelerating the air/fuel gauge will read rich from the beginning to the end of the rich zone. Yes he has one of those color meters and not the analog. The meter used to only display a couple of the rich lights towards the end of the meter but now it lights up all of the rich lights.
What's your take on it? No CEL's or any funny symptoms.
Thanks....

Obviously flames can't be good but can it be a serious problem? Like is something broken or just too much fuel?
Once we figure out what exactly is broken, we can break more of them and sell them. Can you imagine how many people would love to shoot flames when they hit VTEC?

Something has to be broken.

I'll buy one.

Haha
I don't mind the humor at my expense but does anyone have any idea to what may cause this? I'm worried that it may be a serious problem. The car does have a warranty on it but the Honda techs in our area are straight up idiots that have no idea about anything other than a d16 civic.
Could the catalytic converter have anything to do with this. My bros called back and said that the car did sound throatier. When he lets off in a low gear it grumbles more than usual.

Flames in the exhaust = unburned gas self igniting. Usually a sign of running very rich. But you should get a CEL telling that something is wrong (injectors, fuel regulator...)
The throatier sound could be that one of the "back fire" ripped the muffler or another exhaust components open.

Wow.
Bad O2 sensor perhaps? That could cause the engine to run rich, but to belch flames like that it's got to be running really rich. And I have no idea what could be igniting the fuel.

Is it under warranty?
If it is, I suggest you find a good Honda dealer, and bring it there...
Nick
(who has seen rotary engines that spit flame at every shift!)

I didn't think a car could spit flame through a cat converter... My guess is that the cat is blown out, and for some reason the car is running extra rich. Check the cat and the O2 sensor... Hmmm.... Mabe an injector is failing, and sprayin more gas than it should...
bad o2 sensor, your car is running very rich...its obvious. the flames happen when the unburnt gas is ignited in your piping.
btw have you noticed a decrease in MPG? running rich will drastically(and noticably) reduce your mileage.

Fire is good
i've seen cars on the highway that backfire and shoot flames when they downshift(at night) and it looks intimidating.
