Default basic ls/vtec setup on a stock ecu? who's doing it?

running through some options for a motor build, one of them is an lsvtec. being obd2 id want to run it on a factory obd2 ecu no chipping or obd1 conversion stuff. its my daily and i dont want to be fuggin with the ecu for inspection reasons. the motor will be as follows, since i have all the parts lying around

stock ls bottom end rotating assembly (vtec oil/water pump and arp replacement studs)
all stock b16 head except for gsr cams
basic i/h/e setup.

i'm by no means looking to make max power, just have a little more pep for driving around town.

ive been searching on and off for days, and most of what i find are people running higher comp/cammed setups that are all tuned

you need to tune a LSvtec to actually not get it blown the F*ck up on you so you need to a OBD1 ECU most likely a P28 chipped sorry to say

but if you do use a stock ls ecu or B16 ECU you wont have to worry about inspections because your car will be stranded so i guess thats a good thing

My tuner said you can run an LSV on the stock ecu by just running an SAFC w/ wideband.

That's because it's a vtec ecu, so that will work fine for an LSV.

Just because it works doesn't mean it's good.

well aware of this. at minimum it would have to work for a day or 2 so i can get inspected. if it works beyond that id be happy.

ive been tuning my and my friends cars for 7 years now so i know what to look for in the tune. ive got a spare chipped p28 as well as a spare neptune rtp an an extra wideband so i can tune it no problem on numerous programs. i was just looking to avoid that. either way when i put the oem ecu in id also toss the wideband in and keep an eye on the spark plugs to make sure things are safe.

id feel comfortable running a gsr ecu i think, but im not sure if ill code for the iab's since im using a b16 head.

anyone else actually using a factory ecu?

i dont think theres a code for the iab. my a/f was normal with a b16 ecu on a 83 lsvtec on stock injectors. i used the ecu for 2weeks to break in my motor before getting it tuned.

Thanks man, that's the type of first hand experience I was looking for. I would likely do the same especially for break in period. My car itself is a 2000 ex, so I already have wiring for vtec, knock sensor and both o2 sensors.

I have an 84.5mm block with the rs itr pistons in it laying around also, but id like to save that for a bigger cam b20vtec in an ef hatch I've been wanting to do for years

I was told that if you are going to do an LS/Vtec setup....let me rephrase that...a reliable LS/Vtec setup that will last, it will need to be properly tuned. Me for instance, decided to run a P28 ECU, with Hondata S300 (B20/Vtec setup). If I could change one thing, it would be running a P72 instead, so I have control over the secondary runners on the GSR intake manifold.

It really isn't that hard to back-date the car to OBD1. All you need is a conversion harness, and an OBD1 ECU. If you are going to do it for a daily driver, I take it you want it reliable, so do it the right way one time, instead of having to do it the wrong way twice.

run a stock ecu. it will make good power. i was still spanking gt's without a tune. on a stock obdo ecu. im sure you will feel it smoother than when its tuned. and you waste less gas

Are you freaking kidding me?

This is the worst advice ive ever heard. and trust me it will NOT be "smoother" without a tune, and I also know several people that get 30+ mpgs tuned. Some boosted setups too.

A tune is THE absolute most important part of a build, don't skimp out on it man trust me I've seen alot of peoples stuff get blown up due to them not tuning and thinking they can get away with it for awhile.

Also, its not even that expensive, you could get the conversion harness and get a Phearable basemap to run for a little while and you would be ok

ok for the record you can get a car to run 110% and get at least 3-4mpg out of a car plus more hp by getting it tuned over the oem ecu. however thats not my goal for this build.
also, im not going to "basemap" anything. i have multiple neptune/socketed ecus in a box in my spare bedroom. (break in an you can meet my shotgun lol) i personally built and tuned my 500hp b series and it gets 32-35mpg highway with a gsr trans.

the lsvtec with pr4 pistons and a stock head is pretty close to a factory gsr engine. it should run ( safely) on a factory p72 ecu. im really looking for people who have done it to say it either does or doesnt work. personal experience not something you read online. id need it to run well enough to drive and no codes to get inspected. whether or not i convert to obd1, disable the o2 sensors and go to town on the tuning depends on how happy i am with how it runs on the oem ecu but im really looking to avoid it. im looking to renovate my kitchen and bathroom in my house this year and between work, that and my other car the last thing i feel like doing is having to tweak around with my daily driver once the motor is in
