Default tranny question

i have a type r lsd tranny and a gsr tranny. the type r tranny turns to many rpms on the track and the gsr doesnt turn enough. heres my question....

can i take the final drive from the gsr tranny and install it in the type r tranny? i was hoping i could just replace the final drive gear and thats it. thanx for the help!

Which version (final drive) of the R & GSR?

Perhaps another way to look at it is that the engine needs to rev a little higher for the R?

heres the thing. i race in a mini stock class. (oval track) i run 3rd gear. i dont turn enough with gsr(5.98 track gear) and turn to much with type r(6.96 track gear).

so if i put 4.40 final drive in type r tranny it will give me a 6.50 track gear. which should be perfect. plus ill have LSD.

i thought GSR and ITR tranny were the same except for the final drive being different? (4.4 GSR and 4.7 ITR) Or is it 4th and 5th gear ratios different? If so, why not put the GSR 4th and 5th gears into the ITR trans?

AGAIN.....i run 3rd gear. 3rd gear only. my racecar has never seen 4th or 5th gear. gsr 3rd gear is 1.36 and type r is 1.458.

once im on the track i shift into 3rd gear and stay there.

Assuming you have a '98+ JDM ITR transmission, you have to swap the pinion gear (countershaft) simultaneously with the final drive ring gear.

However, that's a much bigger change than just swapping the GS-R 3rd gear over to the ITR transmission because it numerically lowers the gearing on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

If the ITR trans is USDM, then the final drive is the same as the GSR, 4.4

Make sure you know what kind of transmissions you have before you start swapping parts that could potentially already be there. It will save you time and money.
