So I have a syncrowave 180sd. I love it. Learned to weld on it and also a syncrowave 350.

Recently, I have been using a miller dynasty to weld some aluminum. I can notice the arc is different, and the welds look a bit different, but holy cow, when welding aluminum on AC that think buzzes really loud. My syncrowave is pretty quiet, just a quiet hummmmm. But the dynasty is like almost a loud screeching.

is this normal?

i have googled "inverter welders noise, buzz, loud" etc, and dont get any info on it.

 

The stock frequency setting is 120Hz on the Dynasty. The Sync is only running at 60Hz. The higher the frequency the louder it will get, you can turn the Dynasty down to 60 and it will sound the same as the Sync.

 

ahh, so the higher frequecy just lets you strike an arc easier?? i have to admit, the syncrowave doesnt always want to make an arc, sometimes i have to touch the tugnsten to the work first, then it will no prob.

 

Look at Fronius magicwave machines if the noise bothers you

 

I've found for my self, that its good practice to touch the work with the tungsten before you strike your arc. Not only to ensure it arcs, but more than anything for me, it just helps to quickly, and blindly gauge your distance from the work piece right before you arc.

 

Its the switching frequency of the inverter portion of the machine that is making the noise. It is taking DC and switching it on a high carrier frequency to "create" AC.

The transformer machines are just that, a transformer, which uses induction between the two coils of wire. Not really as much sound there.

 

I was talking to the miller rep. a while back and he claimed that the waveform also increases the noise. So a sine wave will be quieter than and Advanced Squarewave. However, I have never played with the machine to confirm this

 

yes you can hear a difference when you change the wave forms. i usually only use advanced square wave though.

 

I like the soft square wave, and refuse to use Sine Wave lol O.P the higher frequency's focus the arc to more of a point making the arc more stable and providing more penetration. Inverters also don't use continuous high frequency while in AC because they bridge the zero mark between negative and positive so fast. It's a win win situation lol
