Fire Hazard. How serious can blown fuse be?
Hello guys, I just want to share something that happened to a Honda Accord. It is pretty serious I think. What happened was the turn lights and instrument cluster suddenly went dead. Normaly the owner checks the fuses and finds out fuses for the turn lights and ignition was blown but the dangerous part is when the owner just simply replace the fuses without having any knowledge why was it blown because fuses dont get blown for no serious reasons. Here comes the scary part, as he replaces the fuses a thick smoke came out of the engine bay and it turns out that the speed sensor went bad and shorted out. fortunately it retards the fire somehow and did not reach the fuel lines. The sensor looks like it came out of bbq pit. The owner is still lucky he still got his car though. By the way the fuse he used was the cheap china ones. Another lesson for him to always buy original Japan made products. Fuses are precision components that are often overlooked.
any fuse would have blown with a short in the line no matter where the fuse is made...i would be willing to bet the guy kept putting in fuses enough (or put in a higher amperage fuse) that the wire harness heated up and burned, fortunately the plastic insulation doesnt burn too well without a lot of heat and will usually burn itself out easily...
I'm not sure about what you said - "any" fuse. How can you explain why is it that the original fuse and spare got blown but the last fuse he used which has the correct amperage as far as the label says 10 amps is still intact. I'm pretty sure this last fuse is the reason why the sensor got burnt so bad and became a fire hazard. Pretty silly for the owner though to put in a fuse the third time hoping for a miracle. The last fuse is marked made in china and the original is a Pacific brand made in Japan. I dont believe that this kind of precision components can be made just "anywhere". I wont risk my life or anyone.
