Does the engine warm up properly?

1 - Make sure the heater hose valve on the firewall is fully opened.

2- Check the coolant level in both the radiator and reservoir. If low, top off and bleed the cooling system.

It takes a while for the thermostat gauge to get up to normal temp.

You may need to replace the thermostat.

so with a perfectly fine thermostat the temperature gauge goes straight to normal operating temperature? or even with a perfectly fine thermostat does it take a little while?

It will take a little longer to get to operating temp when it's very cold outside. In general, I think the engine should reach operating temp in less than 5 min of driving. With a stuck open thermostat, it will take much longer or will never reach operating temp.

I checked it out today and when ive been driving for longer than 10 minutes with the heat off the temp gauge goes to normal. Then when its at normal op temp i turn the heat on and the temp gauge goes all the way to cold?
