1996 jdm type r dissapoinment
I just got this engine that is going in my 1998 gsr but the wiring is in the opposites side and the manifold from the jdm engine doesnt have evap for smog what should i do also i was wonder if the jdm engine has the crank censor?
all this has been covered a million times and you should have researched before you bought, long story short
1. no crank sensor or boss on the pump for it. if you use a p73-a02,03 ecu you need the usdm oil pump, the cfs and usdm vtec solenoid. the harness on the engine you can sell, reuse your gsr harness and extend the coolant temp sensor wire.
2. there is no evap solenoid boss so you either need a usdm p73 manifold or T tap the pcv valve line for evap
you can not run this engine on a p72 ecu if you're thinking of it
if you run a jdm ecu most of this doesn't matter but you can't scan it with iso9001 which is what the usa standard is with scan tools

and in the end its a ilegal swap so just sell it and buy a usdm itr motor!!! you need a usdm 98'' or newer motor to be legal a 96 will never do even if you modifie the motor to pass smog. a ref will fail you.
dealers don't have training on the differences with jdm motors
jdm motors are legal in many states, cali just doesn't happen to be one. they work fine in OR and WA

Are you in Oregon (Wasco as in county.. or ?)
Technically, they're right as the EPA/DMV will tell you it has to be the same year as the car, or newer.
In states where they don't pay that much attention you can often make do...
Or you could arrange a trade of the R for one that will pass muster.
I have an engine similar to yours I put into a 96 GSR - and working around the issues mentioned is doable. I live about 1/2 hour out of Portland OR...

I love how everyone on Honda-Tech assumes they're smarter than anyone who actually works at a Honda dealer.
Hahahaha. It depends on the person really. Ive met guys that work for honda that helped me with the difference between jdm motor parts and not. One of my friends is a ase certified tech for honda and he did a side job putting a new motor in a DA. He couldnt find a B18a1 so he got a B20b1 and had trouble with the swap.
I wouldnt say people on here think they are smarter than the standard Honda technician they probably just understand more about the aftermarket and JDM parts than a honda mechanic would.
This made me laugh.. Most of the technicians at my dealership are more informed on the older model accord, crv, pilot, etc. Not so much when it comes to madtyte jdms. if a jdm swapped integra showed up for service I guarantee 9/10ths would have no clue what they are looking at. But my shop foreman Dave can rebuild an 85 civics carb with his eyes closed.
