Torque Converter -replace or not?? 99 Accord 4cyl.
Hello all,
I am about to re-build the auto trans (BAXA) in my 99 Honda Accord 4cyl (102,00 mi.).
Is it good practice to replace the torque converter when re-building the trans even if the TC shows nos signs of needing replaced??
If I should replace it, are re-builds just as suitable as new OEM?? Cost of rebuild is $150-200. Cost of OEM from stealership is $563.00.
If I buy a re-build, any suggestion on what vendor to purchase from?
Who has the best warranty?
Any help much appreciated.

If the trans had a failure and metal was pumped throughout the transmission, it is very unlikely that the TC made it without being contaminated. Being a donut shape, it is not easy to clean and the stator or lockup clutch could have been damaged. At which point you would have to replace the TC.
There are quality rebuilt TCs out there, but you would have to ask around to find out who has the best quality...
Here's a good read

Thanks for the info Mad Mike!!
Although my torque converter shows no symptoms of being defective, I am getting a new re-built one for my trans rebuild. I drained my trans a while ago and found metal shavings in the old trans fluid. Also the differential bearings are gone. So the odds are real good that my old torque converter is contaminated.
Based on what you said and other articles I have read about torque converters, the # 1 reason people replace them (other than a clear malfunction) is to insure they are installing a perfectly clean torque converter when re-building the trans.
So now I am shopping for the place that does the best job re-building Honda torque converters and who they sell through. Anyone out there know who's the best??
Finally, I read the article on Honda torque converters you suggested. Very informative!!
Thanks again for your help!!!
