Tire requirements for STS?
Does anyone know what the tire requirements are for the STS class? I read somewhere that they must exceed a certain treadwear rating, but I've also heard that anything street legal is STS legal. Anyone know for sure?
As far as I know, any street radial is legal.
From the rule book:
17.3. TIRES
Tires up to and including a width of 225.
Tires must have a minimum tread wear rating of 140.
Section 13.3.F is not applicable to the Street Touring Rules

The Azenis are perfectly streetable and relatively inexpensive to race with. Unless there is a safety issue (and there shouldn't be) I don't see why they should be excluded.
Azenis won't be excluded from SCCA STS/STX useage so don't worry. 39 of 50 car at the recent SCCA Solo 2 national were running in Azenis in STS.
Also your rims in STS can't be wider then 7.5"

I think the treadwear rating has to be over a certain number ( 140? ) in STS so R compound tires can't be used. Can anybody confirm this?
edit: BTW my azenis say 200 on them.

I thought it had to be over 200? Owell, guess it is 140.
The funny thing is you exclude the Azenis then everyone will go to BFG g-force TA KDs. If those are excluded then everyone will go to Kumho MXs or Toyo T1-S. It will never end.
It has been shown in the most recent Grassroots Mag. tire test. The Azenis are MOST DEFINITELY a street tire. In fact, they were not even the fastest street tire, that was the BFG KD's. On the same car same course and same conditions, the SLOWEST R compound they tested was still nearly a second a a half faster than the BFG KD's. The reason the Azenis are so popular right now is that they have nearly the best performance, and are much cheaper than most other top street tires.
And the tire rule for STS is 225 max width and 140 tread wear.

Yep, 140 it is. But the beef with the Azenis is that many people don't believe their advertised treadwear rating of 200, saying that it prolly lower. Seems to be a moot point now due to the fact that the vast majority of STSers are using this tire... me included!
Tire ratings are manufacturer assigned and relative only to that manufacturer's products. So Falken's 140 treadwear rating may not be the same as Bridgestone's. Unless there's other regulations I'm unaware of, it would be pretty easy for a manufacturer to weasel a super soft tire past STS rules.

I'm pretty sure Falken knew exactly what they were doing when they assigned the azenis a 200 treadwear rating... I think it should be lower, even the width sizes are pretty far off. The 195 is more like a 205+ and the 15-205 is more like a 225+. They didn't want to hurt sales by cutting out any potential customers that compete.
Well it's not a Caddy STS but a guy down here runs a Lincon Mark VIII around the cones. I call it Das Boot but he get's it thru the light pretty smoothly and quickly.
