Default Need some professional obd0 help! No start when cold.

Okay so I just purchased a 1989 civic sedan with a first generation b16a swap.

When I test drove the car it ran great, drove it home 3 hours and it was just fine. Between the drive home i visited some friends and probably started the car 10 times and it was fine.

Took it home and the next morning It cranked with no start. I tried priming and starting but it didn't help.

Then after 5 minutes of cranking it finally started and ran like complete garbage like it was way off timing and giving it gas hardly kept it at 3k rpm struggling.

After a few minutes of this it started running normal and idle surged.

Then it warmed up and idled fine and started up everytime again just fine.

I waited 3-4 hours and tried starting it and it took forever again.

It seems to only be cold starts.

Here's something else, the codes are #'s: 6, 9, 22, and 23

Any advice on this issue? I'm a total noob @ obd0 and wiring dual point to multi.

Thanks!

Tap the IACV with a hammer while starting and see if this works, they can get stuck sometimes.
Could be a fuel pump or cracked solder joints on main relay as well.

The IACV is located behind the intake manifold.

Its getting good fuel at all times to the rail. And the main relay wouldn't only react to cold starts (not necessarily cold weather just yet). Not this bad anyway.

I will try the iacv next time i start it and report back.

Anybody else with any tips?

I looked this up for you.....obd0 code's

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) System Indicated
0 Engine Control Module (ECM)
1 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)
3 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP Sensor)
4 Crankshaft Position (CKP Sensor)
6 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT Sensor)
7 Throttle Position (TP Sensor)
8 Top Dead Center Position (TDC Sensor)
9 No. 1 Cylinder Position (CYP Sensor)
10 Intake Air Temperature (IAT Sensor)
13 Barometric Pressure (BARO Sensor)
14 Idle Air Control (IAC Valve)
15 Ignition Output Signal
16 Fuel Injector
17 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
20 Electrical Load Detector (ELD)
21 Variable Valve Timing & Valve Lift Electronic Control Solenoid Valve (VTEC Solenoid Valve)
22 Variable Valve Timing & Valve Lift Electronic Control Pressure Switch (VTEC Pressure Switch)
23 Knock Sensor (KS)
30 A/T FI Signal A
31 A/T FI Signal B
41 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater
43 Fuel Supply System

What ECU are you running? Is the wiring done right or is it a chop and duct tape job? I'd start with your codes and go from there.

you left out some key information.

what happens when you turn the key on, ignition on?
does CEL turn on, then turn off.
does the main relay click, and fuel pump prime, then shut off?

it if does the above, what happens when you try and crank the car?
-does it crank but no start?
-it doesnt do anything?

if it doesnt start, then the first thing you need to do is overlook your ignition components.

make sure the underhood fuse isnt blown, make sure your firing order is right. also make sure that the dizzy isnt 180 out.

maybe replace the dizzy with a known working one, and then see what happens?

I would definitely check the whole ignition route to see if it's got a lot of wear and tear on certain parts.

Everything in the ignition system is new.

CEL stays on when key is in ignition. Main relay clicks, fuel pump primes then shuts off. It cranks but won't start when cold.

Op, you need to address all of your codes first.

Also, it is physically impossible for your distributor to be installed 180 degrees out.

Yes, check the codes first - but it isn't impossible to force it in 180* out, but you do have to work at it.

OP - you didn't say what the CEL did exactly. Turn the key forward to the II position and let the systems run their course. Does the CEL go off after everything is finished? If not, fix that problem first.

code 6 is your ect it greatly affects your cold start fuel delivery. So fix your ect engine coolant temp sensor its on the side of the head under dizzy round two plug wire beside the one wire temp guage one. sounds like you might have a broke wire there. fix it first u might need to pull your harness off and clean it up a little bit. code 9 is a sensor inside your dizzy, itll make your **** pop and miss and run like ***. try to find a new dizzy or hack an ear off a ls. your cars telling you whats wrong with it. 22 is vtec pressure switch, probally in your vtec wiring. 23 is knock if its not wired wire it up, itll be a sensor right under the intake manifold top of block it uses a one wire plug that looks just like your ect, iat plugs.

Thanks, I fixed it last night actually! All I did was fix the ECT and VTEC and the rest of the codes went away. Car runs amazing now and starts easy on the coldest of days.

Thank you all for your help!

Well imagine that... Regardless, read the rules OP - bumping isn't allowed. Also, you kept asking for input without actually doing anything to help us help you.

So i'm supposed to keep remaking my posts until somebody sees them?

And I didn't do anything to the car at the time I asked for help.

The reason I asked was to get some motivation/direction to actually start doing something.
