Please Help Donna - Damsel in Distress!!!
OK here goes with my first post..........
I have a 98 CR-V 2.0 petrol manual - never any real probs aprt from the oil needing topping up every now and again.
Yesterday I had the drivers door panel off to fix the door handle mech and also screwed the glove box door down as it kept falling off. Ended the day very proud of myself and managed to not chip a a nail!
Today my car won't start!!! This has never happened in 5yrs of owning.
The engine warning light comes on but does not go out as usual and the engine then turns over but does not start.
2 weeks ago the oil got low and one litre 5w 30 synthetic oil was put in - the next day it was topped up with 10w 40 semi synthetic (I do hope this hasn't caused a major problem!) The car has done about 200 miles since.
Anyone with any ideas to talk a non mechanical minded girl though what could possibly be a simple fix would be an immediate friend on the forum!
Thanks guys,
Donna

Donna - I've never worked on a CRV, so I just searched for "98 CR-V won't start" and there was some info from CRV owner's club, like the link below where they mentioned a fuel cutoff switch that maybe you bumped when you were working on the glove box. Anyway, take a look. You might also want to take a quick look at the fuse box to see if any fuses have obviously blown. Good luck!!

I'm assuming you're in Europe, judging by the use of the word "petrol" (plus the US never got a diesel CRV or any diesel Hondas yet).
The European cars get their codes checked a little differently than the US cars, from what I understand. Basically the US cars have a plug under the dash where you could just plug in a code scanner and read the codes.
This car (which is also applicable to US models 1992+) I believe will have a two-pin service connector on the passenger side. It's probably green or blue and under the far passenger side of the glove box.
Use a paperclip to jump that connector (2-pin NOT the 3-pin one) and count the number of times the CEL on the instrument cluster blinks. There should be long and short blinks on this model, I believe.
Those numbers of blinks will give us an error code.
That different engine oil viscosity being used wouldn't cause this problem.
<-- Also a woman. Used to work in auto parts. Gender doesn't matter much here. Most guys don't know cars either.
Firstly I wanna say a big thanks to all who replied - much appreciated.
I was up at 8am this morning (I am in London, England) very excited having been given a few ideas from this thread.
And........lo and behold the prize goes to Calif_Kid! Spot on Sir!!! I found a reset switch behind the centre console in the passenger footwell, pressed it and the car is back to normal - engine fault light goes off and car started straight away.
On doing a little more research I believe that this button is only on models intended for the UK or perhaps European market (just in case this info can be of help to anyone else)
Thanks to NOFX for the info as well - I'm sure that will come in handy in the future.
Finally...........what is daklown's issue?!
Thanks again all - I will now be reading and posting with interest now I've found this place.
Happy days
