Default $100 EJ1 Build

So I picked up this EJ1 for $100 from a buddy's sister.

I owned the car a long time ago when it was in a little better shape, so she asked if I'd want it back since she was moving to Texas. I said sure, but I can't afford it, I've got like $100 in my pocket. She told me to come pick it up.

I went and got it and here's how she stands:

I've got two paths I can go down. I can either fix it (head gasket, change the bumpers to the purple ones I have, fix passenger door regulator) and then sell the thing,

Or, fix it, manual swap, change the bumpers and sell one of my other toys.

I like the EJ1 but my hatch and CRX are pretty slick too. The CRX is an Si where the hatch is a STD, but the hatch has a D15B/D16Y7 with an HF tranny and locked diff, so I'm torn.

I'll need a little help deciding on what to do while I change out some parts and make it somewhat pretty again!

Tomorrow I'll probably change the one busted headlight and the front bumper and driver's side fender. Might do the rear bumper if I get the time too!

Updates tomorrow night

Going to be doing head gasket and fixing the body up. From there, I don't know. Like I said, if I keep it from there, manual swap at least. Then maybe some low!

CRX is a boosted D16A6, Civic is just clean and I've put a lot of work into it :/

200k on the motor, but IIRC the motor isn't the original, but it's still a Z6.

I pulled the purple bumpers off of my parts car today and slapped them on this thing, along with a new driver's side fender. Going to get the headlight changed in the morning and maybe the tail lights, I have a clean set of tail lights in the parts car.

I think I'm going to keep it, I'm still unsure at the moment. I have pretty much everything for what I'd like to do to the car (Manual swap, drop it a bit, fix all of the dings and dents, etc.) so it's a toss up at this point.

I never realized how easy it was to pull EG bumpers, I had these off in like 5 minutes. Ridiculous. Why aren't EFs this easy?

I need an opinion though, to drop it ~2" should I go with some decent adjustables or just get 2" drop springs? Honestly I've ridden in both and the drop springs felt more comfortable (by far), but I want a second opinion.

With the right mods, and a decent paint job, you should be able to flip a pretty solid profit. Good pickup!

Well, it went from this pile:

To:

Still a lot of work to do yet. I need to get a couple bolts for these bumpers, too. The parts car had one front clip and one back clip for the factory screws, so I'll have to bolt-and-nut the others. No big deal!

I just threw my 521's on it for now because those five spoke budget Generic Wheels Co. 14s were kind of ugly. They've got pretty damn good tires though, and I had a good tire put on the fourth one too, probably going to chunk them on CL for cheap to get rid of them and pick me up some ARP studs and a head gasket for the D16Z6.

Also, pretty sure I'm going to have to replace the wiper switch: You have to hold it in a certain spot for it to stop. Luckily I have one of everything on the parts car.

Going to sell my 'Rex, pretty sure I've decided on that.

The hatch I'll probably never get rid of, put too much time into it since I was ~18 and it's really the sentimental value more than anything.

But yeah, boosted 'Rex is going up for sale as soon as I get the head gasket changed on this purple bucket. Should be within a week or so.

I've had plenty. The hatch is just.... Mine. And always will be. This is my fourth EJ alone, and I've decided an EJ1 is what I want for now. I'll keep it at least until I get bored with it.

Anywho was going to start pulling the head off, yanked all four plug wires -- they all snapped off in the head. Anyone got some hella tips for pulling those tubes out of the plug galleys? I've had this problem before and just used some long thin needle nosed pliers... But if there's an easier way I'm willing to learn.

Nice work so far man, the engine probably overheated at some point causing the spark plug boots to melt onto the plugs (personal experience). The right set of pliers may possibly work but I used a wire hanger to create a hook and sharpened the end to get them off. Took a while but ended up working pretty well. You may want to have a magnetic pick up tool handy also. You might as well take the valve cover off if you havent already, it'll give you a little room. Hope this helps, good luck.

Ah man, the hanger trick sounds amazing. Thanks for the tip. What you said is exactly what happened, I've dealt with this twice before, once on an old Z6 head and once on a D15B1 in a Civic STD.

I've got an old hanger here that I'll try and bend around into a hook tomorrow. I've got a magnet pickup tool in my tool bag out in the car too.

After I get these silly Eagle Alloy wheels sold off I'll buy the head gasket and might fit some ARP studs into the budget, like I said, but it depends on who gives me what for them.

I don't know what my plans are yet, dropping it a little I know that much. When I sell my Rex I'm going to pick up a linkage, pedals, a master cylinder and auto-to-manual mount for this thing and put my DX tranny in it. Who knows where it will go from there!

No way, single cam 4eva

Don't know what I'll want for the Rex yet. Been driving it back and forth to work, really needs all the charge piping redone, I'm only building 2PSI of boost when it should be making 8

My friend had the car for a while and I got it back with a busted alternator and a cam seal that was literally pouring oil all over the face of the little D. :/ I fixed it and started DDing it to my shop and back for now.

I'm thinking about getting rid of the CRX and this EJ1 once I get it all together, just leaving the 521s on it and throwing it on CL. It's a good start for someone, when I get it all together it'll pretty much just need bodywork.

Anywho, I'm about to go try and yank these plug wire tubes out of the head.

Did mechanical timing today because it felt like it was advanced or retarded a tooth, just wanted to see how well it would run when I got that figured out. Cam was two teeth off! Got the timing back in check and then the car wasn't running but a few seconds and then ran out of gas

It's odd, I drove it from about 10 miles away with a quarter tank of gas, and now it's bone dry. I either have a gas thief running around my neighborhood or something is up.

Anyways, getting the head gasket tomorrow after I drop these wheels off that I sold. I've decided I'm going to fix and sell this thing and put the money into my new house and a mig welder Been needing a mig for a while now.

Ouch, sorry about that. It was actually another guy who texted me, I didn't mean to call you out like that. Terribly sorry bro!

Anyways, got everything together on the EJ1 after letting it sit for a long time, about to start driving it once I sell my CRX but I still have to get the timing belt on and P/S delete done.

Selling the CRX to tag it insure it for 6 months, and the rest of the money is going into a license for the dev tools I use so I can get on the road to becoming a software developer

Anyone wanting a turbo CRX for $2250 obo let me know. Trying to sell it ASAP. cash talks.
