TECH Q: Ticking noise between 1k-3k rpm...
hey
just got a used 00 GSR this past saturday. everything about it is great, except...
i noticed on the way to work today (i was driving in rush hour traffic) that between 1-3k rpm, there is a really soft ticking sound. it sounds like a belt or a fan or maybe something else. sounds like someone stuck a piece of paper into a slow-moving fan... "tucka-tucka-tucka-tucka".... and it only happens when i am gassing the car... it doesnt happen when i let off the throttle, and it doesnt make any sounds at idle. i listened very closely at idle and it is as quiet as can be.
i know i know, i should have listened more closely for it when i was test driving it. but i was too busy beating on it to listen for the little quiet stuff. lesson learned.
anyone have any ideas on what this sound is?
thanks!

Is it only when you are turning and accelerating? If so check the CV Axle boots.
If it is always when accelerating then check for either valvetick (Get a valve adjutment) or check for a leak in your exhaust somewhere.

I've got that same problem. I've been told its pinging or detonation. (I've got in Type R cams and Toda cam gears). I wish I knew for sure how to get rid of it for good. I've noticed that sometimes a good octance bost helps, but I hate having to put that in everytime I fill up.
good idea guys...
i will throw some octane boost, give it an oil change, and check the exhaust for leaks first.. and after that i'll get a valve adjustment. it doesnt happen during turning so i dont think it's the CV...
thanks for the help! anyone know how much a valve adjustment would cost?
kolegian - you've never been able to get rid of it?
that is not good...

I'll tell you what it is. It is the EVAP Purge valve that is mounted on the firewall. The GSR has it mounted on the manifold, but since your car has the Skunk2 manifold, it had to be relocated, so I put it on the firewall. Why the R's don't have the same noise is beyond me, maybe they have something to dampen the noise.
It is not gas, fans, belts, valves, anything.

Damn man thanks for sharing. I have the same problem and it's been driving me crazy. It only ticks when i give it gas and i've been like WTF is that sound. I got my axles replaced cause i thought thats what it was. Needless to say it didnt' solve the problem. I'll check it out thanks.
