Default Checking to see if I got screwed...

Intel:

1999 Honda Accord EX
153,146

Problem: Honda started to sound like I was taking off on a runway... figured the exhaust was going... I had the flex pipe replaced last year because of the same sound.. Mechanic stated that my muffler had a whole in it in the rear as well and that the whole exhaust system needed to be replaced.

Here is the rundown of parts installed:

QTY PART # UNIT PRICE
1 53541 Flex pipe $161.16
1 31645 gasket $2.82
1 31355 gasket $6.27
2 31383 $19.94 X2 = $39.88
1 49237 Resonator Assembly $123.89
1 31332 gasket $6.30
1 53257 Muffler $253.56

Total labor was $105.00

Total Cost was $746.62

Does that sound about right... ??

Thank you in advance,
J

Luckily, for you, that numbering system is familiar to me.

Yeop.
You were charged full retail for the parts. If you were able to do it yourself you could have purchased the parts for considerably less.
Muffler shops make their money not in labor costs, but part pricing.

Not sure where 31355 is supposed to be used, and he used the CA flex pipe because it is half the cost of the Fed flex pipe.

Now something that does trouble me is the 31383 gaskets, you have stated 19.98 each x 2. These are $2 gasket. I cannot see a price hike of 1000%. I think someone goofed and added a digit to that cost.

Looks like he charged about 2.5x his cost. Not surprising, but I would ask about the 31383 gasket cost that seems like a blunder.

Thanks Mad Mike, I will call them on Monday and ask about the price of the gaskets... believe me, if I could do this on my own, I would have.. or at least bought the parts first and then had the mechanic install what I bought... - not sure if he would do that..

-thank for your help,
J

31383 is less than $2 at RockAuto but $10 - $12 at the big three auto parts places. IDK why the huge price difference. I stupidly didn't back the gaskets online before I replaced my cat the other day and ended up paying $11 for the gasket at AA. Perhaps the above shop just doubled the local auto parts store's price.
