Oil Low Suddenly, can't locate leak
Hey guys,
I check my oil every other fill up in my Prelude and 2 weeks ago I was driving home (after about 500 miles since the last time I checked) and my oil went from the top indicator on the dipstick to not visible.
Oil light DID NOT come on (weird in itself). So I added a quart, cranked the motor, let it run, and re-checked... still doesn't show up on the dip stick. Add another quart, it's now at the bottom of the stick. It took 2.3 quarts (and no oil light???).
Now I don't know if I'm imagining things but it sounds like there may be a tick from the valvetrain or top of the motor @ idle.
Besides a compression and leakdown test (doing this saturday) what else should we look at when trying to address this issue. I'm going to be replacing the valve stem seals and upgrading to crower stage 2s over the winter so we'll be inside anyway. My assistant (lol) is a 15 years Nissan Master Tech, so throw anything out there no matter how in depth it seems because I have someone to help.
Also, what could be the cause?? I can't find an oil spot in my garage... I'm definitely not burning a quart every 200 miles or else I'd notice it in my exhaust. Where did it go? Could it be leaking under pressure on the highway?

your lude does not have a low oil light. only a oil pressure warning light. you caught it before you lost oil pressure. the tick is common in the cylinder head. probably a lma. pull your plugs out and read them. see if you are burning oil or just leaking somewhere you have not seen yet. if you lost that much oil that quickly i would think it would have been smoking like a beast. you have a leak.
Thanks for the quick response and explanation of the oil light. Good news for me I guess. I had a disaster fund built up already. Looks like I have money to fix what's broke and buy more goodies! lol
