I want my D15B6 to look and drive sparkling new, what to do...
Hi guys, I've been driving around a ratty 91 CRX HF for a year now but my gas mileage is somewhere around 30mpg... a farcry from the 50+ I should be expecting. I'm going to be selling my horrible, terrible BMW 7 series here soon so I should have quite a bit of money to invest in the CRX and I was really wanting to do some work on it, starting with the motor.
Seeing as it is 20 years old now, it looks 20 years old and drives like an 1891 Honda CRX. Anachronistic inaccuracies aside, I really want to make it practically new. I've looked around for a couple months now and since I've only found a couple older carb'd D15's from HF's, I have decided to just clean the D15B6 I currently have. In terms of cleaning it up and replacing parts, what is interchangable from other 1.5L D series motors (block, head assembly, etc.) and what should I save? What parts will I need to buy new and what should consider replacing? Also, what would be the absolutely most effective method for making my motor LOOK new? When I say new I mean literally out-of-the-factory fresh.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Get out the can of spray paint and...
Obviously, if you haven't torn the engine apart you can't know what needs replacing yet. This holds even more truth if you haven't done any diagnosing. The HF is a 8 valve head and isn't very easy to come by; neither is the intake, air box, drums, knuckles, transmission, (I think you get my drift)... Essentially, until you figure out what you need - SAVE EVERYTHING. This way you don't have to find much if you can reuse a majority of things. If you are wanting everything looking "shiny", then detail and paint things. I am not sure exactly how far you are wanting to go - but with these vehicles returning to fr which they came - Honda is discontinuing parts day by day and availability is diminishing. There isn't any aftermarket support for the HF model like there is for everything else.
Go sit on a site like www.hondaautomotiveparts.com for a while and watch your jaw drop and tear ducts start to flow. (From Prices and Discontinuations.)
