Default How can I determine what ys1 trans?

I am looking to buy a cable B16 or GSR trans, I found one on craigslist and I am trying to see how I can tell if its a GSR or LS trans? Is there a way i can spin the input shaft and find out?

There should be a sticker on the side of the transmission that says so. But then again it could be swapped internals. You would have to take off the case to find out for sure though since the diffs for the gsr/type r and the ls/b16 are different.

Ok, i did this with a trans i ALMOST bought. If the trans is on the floor, do the following:

Put the trans in 3RD gear. (shifter shaft should be pulled straight back, not tilted)
Bring a clutch disc that fits, and put it on the input shaft
Now mark the Diff where its at

You want to rotate the disc so that the diff makes 1 full rotation, mean while count how many times the clutch disc rotates. U should find one of the following:

If its an LS, the input shaft should rotate aprox 5.41 times for 1 rotation of the axle
If its a B16, the input shaft should rotate aprox 6.42 times for 1 rotation of the axle

Hope this helps
