'97 Accord: Noisy alternator, burning smell

'97 Accord: Noisy alternator, burning smell
Tonight my alternator (I think) suddenly began making a "whirring" sound and I have a smell of burning rubber/plastic under the hood. Is it likely I burned a diode? What's the best way to diagnose this? Thanks!
