in the 90-91 S1 trannies in the US with the 4.266 final, you can only interchange with Y1 JDM countershaft and ring gear to upgrade to 4.4 .. the 92+ shafts are bigger and more similar to the 94+ hydraulic.
Gears interchange the same way, 90-91 with JDM 90-91, and 92+ with 94+ hydraulic, etc.
