Bad Cat & Exhaust Valve on 3 cyl Help....
Hello Team Honda !
so ive been getting Misfire on all cylinders. Im also getting a Cat-converter code .
I brought the car into a shop and they said i have a bad Cat as well as a bad seal (exhaust valve ) on cyl 3.
options are to get head work for $1500-$2000 car has 175k
or replace engine with one that has 75k for $700 plus labor.
now what im thinking, because i dont have that much money right now foreither option, is to replace the cat and then shut down fuel and spark to cyl 3.
im not sure how to do this. what do you guys think. is this a good idea for now. i dont want to mess up the good cylinder.
the compression on cyl 3 was 95. the rest are good.
thanks in advance for your help

also is shutting down a cylinder bad for your engine ? and where is the best place to shut it down. I was thinking the power supply going to the injector on 3 cyl
Best bet would be to have the original problem with the engine fixed. Then if the catalyst was indeed damaged, have it replaced. Just because a code is tripped does not mean that the component itself has failed, just that it appears to have fallen out of expected parameters, and should be checked.
Awfully expensive for a valve job. Machine shops here charge $250 for the head work alone. Add six hours R&R labor and another $150 for a head gasket set. Even @ $100/hour shop labor rate the total would be right around $1000. Shop around. 175K miles isn't that much.
also if you do replace the cat, keep your oem one, they are worth money. alot of shopd well tell you you need your cat replaced. then keep your old one and sell it for a profit.
i get a second option on both issues. bring it to somone who knows hondas and dont any anything about what the first shop said. if the valve seal is indeed gone you might be better off spending the money on a jdm h22 conversion or something along those lines.

I replaced the cat converter. The car is running much better. The check engine light has not gone off in 3 days for misfire or cat. just a heads up.
What were the codes, you didn't post the actual code numbers outside of 'misfire' and 'bad catalyst code'. BTW you didn't mention the year or model of your car.
Were any of these codes mentioned?
