my brothers head got trashed so i put a y7 head on, ive got the y7 timing belt which is pretty snug. no issue, the only issue were are having is timing it. camshaft marks are inline with the 2 points on the plastic.. and crankshaft marks are lined up.
i should be roatating counterclockwise. correct?
i didnt tighten the tensioner?, but it felt pretty tight.. should i rotate it 3 teeth down an tighten the tensioner?...about a 1/2" of play each way on the belt.
im not sure if im skipping a tooth?
it seems to be pinging out of the exhaust.
how do you know if it has skipped a tooth.
any help is appreciated, anyone encounter this problem with this set up?

Wait, so what you are saying is you never loosened the tensioner? If you have play on the intake side, THEN YOUR BELT IS NOT TENSIONED PROPERLY... These are interference engines... so if you are loose enough to skip one tooth you will wind up skipping multiple thus bending valves. Your compression should be around 10:1 - but should be fine for even 87 octane. Is your ignition timing set properly?

tensioner was tightened, but i didnt rotate it 3 teeth back before tightening it. but tonight i did. and no improvement. i then put tension on the tensioner with a pry-bar and tightened it.
distributor rotor is positioned at #1 sparkplug port.
cam marks are aligned with indicators. (even tryed matching them to the head, where the valve cover sets.bout 1 tooth diffrence)
crankshaft is aligned with the arrow on the block.
found out he is using valero 91 gas in it..
this is my 8th time timing it.. gah so frustrating
thanks for the help man!
