I've had a code 17 come on occasionally on my '88 HF as well. Reset the ECU many times. Never had a problem with the speedometer itself. Speedo gear was changed when the transmission was swapped about a month ago. Problem has persisted exactly the same the whole time.
Honestly haven't put any work into repairing it yet though. Would really like to get a service manual for this car.

Typically it's the speedometer "pulser" that fails on the back of the speedometer. As what throws the code and what drives the actual speedometer are completely different from each other...
i got the oem manual hahaha and bro if you changed the cable have you check your plugs if they are too loose they wil cause a bad connection and sometimes while your driving the code wil come on due to the vibration of the car going down the road and the plugs for the cluster is loos or the one by the fusebox i had this problem cuz my wiring was chopped i doubt it that you will unless you cut something or unpluged something wrong other than that your screwed cuz its all electrical
I'd like to see a VSS throw a code when it's low on oil.
Does it have an oil sensor in it?
The cable ones don't even have wires on gear drive so throwing a code from one of those would be pure awesome.

Well, from what I hear its a JDM/EDM only option and they come with Boost by Gear control from the factory! If you take it out there are ***** to adjust the settings - you can even use it as a boost controller!!! Just from what I hear though...
I don't have any idea how it works I just know I threw a code 17 and somehow noticed the axle seal was busted. Replaced it no more code.
Check make sure it is seated on both ends.
There is a little clip that holds it in the tranny.
Mine did it last thursday. Code 17.
Stuck my hand around the tranny and pushed the cable down a little more and heard it pop and seat correctly.
I'm having the occassional issue with it due to using a hatch cable in my wagon (believe it is a little shorter).

Mine seems entirely random and can pop on when I start the car and then not come on the next time the car is started, even if the car is off a matter of minutes. lol
I'm looking to replace the cluster here soon and I'm not especially worried about it, as far as things go.
