Default Plug wires every 10 months

Hi all,

I decided to join the forum after fighting with my 99 Honda Accord for almost 3 years now.
The symptoms are shaking engine/misfire. I run the codes and I get low 300's (301, 302, 303,304) .
The solution every time has been to replace the plug wires. I believe plug wires should last much longer than 10-12 months. Could there be too much voltage going through the plug wires and if so, how is it regulated?

Thanks

What are you using to "run the codes and get low 300's"?

The Check Engine Light codes are one long flash followed by a short flash - yielding a ## format. Are you using some generic scanner?

And what brand(s) of wires are you buying? And have you replaced spark plugs?

*edit*

Whoops, realized you're OBDII - not OBDI

Low 300's then would indicate a misfire. Have you replaced spark plugs and distributor? (Brand is still important)

I think Muffin means have you replaced the spark plugs and distributor cap and rotor, not the entire distributor...........

I have replaced the distributor cap, not the rotor, and I replaced the plugs when I replaced the plug wires 2 days ago.
I scanned the codes with an Actron CP9125.

The car is running good again until the next time I will have to change the wires again prematurely.....

What brand wires?

I am wondering if you have an issue with the coil or distributor.

I would test the coil first.

For the 1999 Accords, the coil is internal within the distributor.

What brand of stuff did you replace it with?

Hondas can be finicky with certain brands, and you're best to stick to the OEM.

The plug wires are Autolite professional series from Advanced Auto and the plugs are NGK iridiums

Im guessing your running completely? Autolite wires=nono oem or ngk wires. Honda dont like anyother brand not well insulated like ngk or oem. Other brands start leaking voltage thru the wires causing misfire. Copper wires is what you want.

Does the problem go away right after the wires are changed? After you erase the codes it really takes a year to come back?I'm trying to see if the misfire codes are related to the ignition problem and nothing else.

The misfire codes go away immediately but I still get a different code or 2 for emissions. I don't remember off the top of my head what they are but when I looked them up in the past, people suggested changing out the catalytic converter and possible an O2 sensor. I will run the code checker and see what the codes are tonight.

Pull your spark plugs and see what the tips look like. The condition of your spark plugs can tell you some things about how well your car is running and what could be the cause of any issues.
