Default h22 block/h23 crank

i know people have been doeing this for awhile but do you have to use h23 rods or could you use h22a rods
or does that defeat the purpose?

If its going to be based around stock parts then you need to use the h23 rods. If you are having a custom piston made then you can use the longer H22 rods and have a piston made with a shorter compression height.

Depending on what kind of compression you are looking for, the H22 rod with H23 piston should work out ok though correct? And if you wanted to get into the 12.8 to 1 range, using H22 rods with H22 USDM pistons, or is that way too sketchy on clearance?

ok so i have a jdm h22a engine eagle h22a rods and an h23a1 crank. im aiming for 11.5:1 or 12.0:1 cr somewhere in there enough compression to run skunk pro 2s. so should i just use the jdm pistons which i believe are 10.6:1 or should i go type s(11.1:1) or mahle gold (11.5:1) aftermarket. what im really asking is how much will the 95mm stroke and h22a rods raise or lower compression?

If you did that the piston would surely hit the head, the piston would be roughly .085" out of the hole. Stock gasket is .027" and I believe the counterbore in the head is about .06" so if it didnt hit, it would be right there. That also doesnt account for rotational forces where things will stretch out from there. IMO you want about .04" piston to head clearance.

OP assuming you did (you can't) but assuming you were able to run type-s pistons with h22 rods and a 95mm stroke crank your compression would be 15.2:1 This wouldnt work of course and it also would not work with those cams. The compression would be high enough but your valve pockets wouldnt be deep enough. and your valves would crash into the piston. I'd be hesitant to run the Pro2's on any stock piston really, you need the deep pockets that an aftermarket piston would have IMO but I'm sure its been done.

If I were you I would run an H23 rod and a type-s piston. You will need to have some work done on the rods but its very minimal and any machine shop should be able to handle it. I would also run a slightly thicker gasket than stock. That will get your compression to where you want it and also give you more clearance for those cams.

A .051 gasket with the type-s pistons and H23 rods and crank would get you 11.66:1 for example. A bit on the low side I feel for Pro2's but it would probabyl work. I'm running that same setup in my 5th gen and I'm running Pro1's

I've also got a bunch of H23 vtec info on my website if you are interested.

Yeah, custom piston and sleeved block if you are set on those rods.

I plan on using the H23 crank and rods with type-s pistons and a stock head gasket.

I'm looking for a machine shop that will fly-cut my type-s pistons for valve clearance for either tuner 2s or pro 1s

There is a huge thread on this combination in the FAQ with a lot of good info.

My build with an H23 crank and rods, with JDM H22 pistons, was pretty damn good, with stock JDM cams and a crappy header. I really wish I had done valvetrain when I had it apart, so that I could have swapped cams and seen the true potential, if I build it back up, I will probably do just that, just need to find a good B bore H22A piston lol.
