What can i do to gain HP in D16y7 and still stay smog legal??
Well ladies and gents, i unfortunately live in CA and drive a 95 civic hatch that i rescently aquired after selling my 93. Its got a d16y7 5 speed manual swap.
As far as mods go, it has a fujita SRI, and some sort of "factory style" aftermarket muffler (most likely from muffler shop). All from a previous owner.
My goal: gail useable 20 hp while not modifying the exhaust and staying CA smog legal. The reason i cant even have a catback is because i hate the ricerish sound... no offence to anyone but im sorry, the sound of any exhaust setup on 4 cylinders just bleeds my ears!!!! Thats why i dont wanna touch the exhaust
Is it possible, or should i not even try? Its my daily driver so im seeking just a bit more pep out of the car... I just need to get on the freeway without winding out the damn hamster of a motor. Hell, if i can gain HP, why not.
oh and my budget: 1000 dollars or less!
So far, im leaning towards:
Bigger throttle body
Gunking out the whole engine
Skunk 2 intake manifold
Need all the advice i can get, thank you!

Without a tune the TB/IM won't do **** for you. IMO tuning the car will make it illegal.
Even with a tune, they still wont do anything.
A y7 has got to be the one of the worst D series engines to try to get power out of out.
I really see no way of doing this for 1k. Save your money, and enjoy the MPG.
When you have 2-4k you can toss a b series in it, and then get the "go" you want.

I just built a y7/z6 mini me and its in my del sol running like a charm. If you need any more info on doing this let me know, There is TONS of info out there on mini me swaps
Don't waste your money on a sohc!!!! Even worse when your staying legal.. Im in Cali and have my swaps bar'd and not even hard to do.
The "rice" sound that your hearing is from people using a test pipe. I myself have a custom 2 1/2 piping w/ a hayame muffler (which looks stock w/ polished SS) and I dont have that "rice" sound your talking about because I use a high flow catalytic converter. I hate it too, but when at the track I use a test pipe..
Doing a mini me is honestly a waste of money and therefore no longer "legal"

for the cost of a mini me swap, most of the time you can pick up an entire SOHC vtec swap on craigslist for the same price. so many people just throw them away when going b series. IMO, just throw a z6/y8 transmission in it, and enjoy the shorter gears.
You can get a b18b1 on CL for cheap and easy to make it legal. It just mind blows me when people are building their N/A sohc. IDK, but I guess it's your money, just do some research before hand.

It's probably that you're beating the **** out of your car to make it seem more powerful than it is but I own a DX also and I can't really say it's a horsepower monster. No one drives their car like that everyday. Regular, NORMAL, driving habits and the Y7 is slow as dirt.
I second this. i bought a "perfect" z6 swap and ended up with an engine with blown rod bearings. i did end up getting my moneys worth back by parting it out. bought it for $500 and sold the tranny for $250, cylinder head for $150, dizzy $75, axles $40, short block for $80 with the bad bearings. so i made a lil over $90 on it.
Are you crazy? This is mine d16y7, I think it accelerates good with this burned clutch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eoOv...el_video_title
