Civic 04 manual transmission rattling noise -- Please Help

I am having trouble with the manual transmission on my '04 Civic. Sometimes when I put the car in reverse(usually cold, but not always) and let out the clutch, it just makes a light, intermittant rattling noise. If I shift through the gears and try again it is usually fine. The mechanic wants an $800 bucks to open it up and have a look. Anyone else experienced this with a Honda?

How low does the RPM drop when you hear this rattle?

Is the sound actually coming from the transmission, or could it be something else?

How loud is it?

Does the clutch slip at all?

How many miles are on the car?
