dumb starter question
hi all,
can someone explain to me the difference between a "starter" and a "starter solenoid"?
from looking at diagrams online, it appears that the solenoid is simply a component of the starter. meaning, if i were to purchase a starter, it would already include a solenoid. is that correct? (is the solenoid the piece that delray has labeled "9 SWITCH ASSY MAGNETIC"?)
what's weird is, looking at autozone or oreilly, the solenoid is MORE expensive than the entire starter. so why wouldn't everyone just buy the entire starter? am i missing something?
second, what is the "starter relay"? is that yet a 3rd item, different from the solenoid? can someone show me an online listing for one (autozone, etc)?
sorry if it's a dumb question. just trying to figure out where to go from here, with a starting issue i'm having.
thanks!

Yes, it is the magnetic switch assembly.
It can be replaced independently of the motor, but in most cases when buying a starter motor for a Honda/Acura you will get the solenoid, just make sure it is there.
Like a lot of things the sum of the parts can be less then some of the parts alone, and yes, your better off just replacing the whole starter motor assembly.
The starter relay is "yet a 3rd item", if your car is a manual, [5speed] then you have a starter relay, it is controlled by the output of the ign. switch, [starter output] and the CIS, [clutch interlock switch], it is a redundant safety piece and is not found in the automatic, the A/T Gear Position Switch is the "safety".
Are you having a problem with the starter, if so, what is happening or not happening.
What is the MM&Y of your car?
Is it an auto or a 5speed? 94

You're actually already helping me with the starting issue: https://honda-tech.com/forums/acura-integra-6/car-doesnt-want-start-help-troubleshoot-2977826/
Just trying to learn a bit about starters - never had to deal with them before.
OIC, just noticed that it was the same OP.
FYI, there are no dumb questions, just dumb answers.
You did not need another tread for this, you should have just asked in your original tread.
Do the starter circuit and bypass jump tests I suggested and you will find the problem. 94
