Default Honda accord Trans problem!

Okay, so my father in law gave me a 99 honda accord 4 cly automatic with 153k miles that has a trans problem and he dosent want to deal with it so he bought a new car =D I took it for a test drive today. Car dosent go above 10 mph, and rpm shoots up but speed does not pick up when i step on the pedal. I want to hear from ya before i take it to a shop to tear the trans down.

Did you try selecting a different gear manually?
Is there enough ATF in the transmission?
Is the CEL/MIL light on? Whats the code?

Does the tranny downshift to 1 or 2 and you can't shift back? My dad's 02 Accord shifted to 2nd gear on its own and it couldn't be over-ridden. He got a service bulletin from Honda for warranty repair. You should look into that if it happened to yours.

Definately check the trans fluid first. Smell it to see if it smells burned. If it smells like burned clutches your toast. If you do end up having trans work DO NOT go to a Honda dealer or Ammco. Try to find an independant guy who does it on the side or something. Trans shops are the biggest rippoff artists of them all along with dealers.

Sounds like the transmission slipping badly, which generally means a new or reman.

Yep its way to much. As your aware they are not the strongest units out there. $400 is plenty for that and only if he gaurentees it's a good working unit. A reman is only $200 more than he's asking. new they are about $1800, and remans $1000-1200. A good used with 60k or less would be $6-700. http://www.a1partsdepot.com/1999-HON...n-P318762.aspx
