Its the D16Y8. Just bought a 98 EX coupe and the oil drain plug is dripping and feels like if I snug it anymore it will strip completely. It has what looks like an aluminium pan. Any repair possible without replacing the pan? Can it be tapped without introducing metal debris? Would that liquid thread repair stuff work?

 

Are you sure you just don't need a new drain bolt crush washer? The drain bolt should only need 33 lb-ft of torque.

 

^^ definitely check the crush washer. If you do/did strip the threads, just spend the $60 on a new pan. Pretty easy and straightforward replacement and will be a permanent fix as opposed to anything you can get at your auto parts store.

 

Pan is aluminium or something, ~$200 from Honda. I'm pretty sure the threads are ready to let go. I'll probably end up pulling the pan and installing a timesert. Ugh..

At least I'll have steel threads after.

 

~20 dollars from a junkyard. One could always take off the pan to tap if you're worried about metal debris.

 

PM me if you need a replacement pan. I got a junk D16Y8 in my garage. If a steel pan off a D15B7 would fit, I got one of them too. People are saying $20, so I'd say $20 plus my cost to ship.

 

d15b7 pan will not fit ! it has a different oil pump hole alignment for the pan. it would have to be a oil pan from a 96-00 civic with a d16 motor. y8 has an aluminum pan and the y7 had a steel pan.

 

I'll likely remove the pan next oil change after I try a new plug with a torque wrench and new washer.
