Icon2 97 EX/Lowering Springs

I was thinking about getting a set of lowering springs for my 97 EX. I want to lower it on my stock steelies but I want to avoid rubbing. Was looking at Tein H-tech and Tein S-tech for around $170 ish.

Define "rubbing"

Without stiffer damping, you're going to rub on dips in the road and such.

"cosmetic" springs like the ones mentioned are often too soft and you will rub some on big drops on curbs, etc.

You really need to get a coilover with custom rates and get the height where you like.

Mild drop ~350front and 250/rear for comfort

Any lower you'll need 450 front to prevent rubbing and 300-400 rear to keep things neutral.

I just don't want it touchin on my fenders. I figure if it dosen't do that then I wouldn't have any other problems with it. How far down can i go before it gets complicated? 2 inches? 1.5 inches?

With stock steelies I doubt you will have to worry about rubbing with those high offsets.

Even with Tein S-Tech?
You deffinetly need a new set. At least look into a set of Koni Str-t's

H&R or Eibach Sports springs are better IMO. Civic shocks are too soft. I would go with some good(low miles) Integras all around for the stock route. For $170, you can find used Ground Controls. I think I have a set laying a round.

i would look to coilovers and heres why:

new springs 150-170
new shocks 250-300

but the time u pay a shop to assemble them,that is, if you dont want to brave it yourself, you can have a set of coilovers that drop right in that you can do yourself.

dont forget an alignment either route you go.

Sence when do you need to be brave to install springs/shocks on a car!?

Also, those coilovers are junk.

i have a set of drop zone springs i had on my 97 EK for only 1,500 miles with stock struts, 2.5" drop in front & 2" drop in rear, with 205/55-17 and it rode like a dream no hard ride unless of corse you hit a hard bump, and no tire rub at all, even did the alinment to stock specs...they are powder coated red, if interested i'd sell them for $90. shipping included... i live in SC

I like your logic but that's not a deal. Ebay is cheaper. It's over $650 with CA tax. So with that kind of money, I can look into different and better alternatives.

Used springs can be had under $100 and used Integras shocks(non-blown-mileage under 75k) can be had under $100. You do the math OP.

if the guy has never used a spring compressor before, and doesnt know what he's doing can be hurt. Its not the 1st time poeple have been hurt trying to compress a spring with the cheap auto parts store compressor and im sure it wont be the last.

As for buying used OE shocks doesnt make sense as they cant handle the spring rates. this is why you replace the shocks when you use lowering springs


Those coilovers are fine for DD use, not track use.

I had never used one before when I did mine, and I am fine.

The whole, "they'll go flying and break/kill anything in their way" doesn't really mean much with these cars.

If you have a impact, you don't even need a compressor. The front spring will pop forward maybe 6'' and the rear, will bearly come un seated. Yes, I have experience doing this. is it the smartest way? No, but's a hell of lot easier then using a compressor.

With that said compressors are not that hard to use, be smart, take your time and noithing bad will happen to you. Unless, you are really stupid. ( I am not responsible for any damages you cause, if any)

Really? You're suggesting $650 for a knock off where for the same price, can get a set of Progress or $100 more for GC/Koni. Get out the thread. You don't have experience with stock shocks with lowering springs, keep being ignorant. Stock shocks are cheap alternatives for non-aggressive drops. You think Tokico Blues are better?! KYB Gr-2? HAHA! I rode with Eibach springs with stock DC4 shocks(150k) and it was fine for a DD. Hey, do what y'all like. It's not my car.

For $650, you might as well get the Eibach Sports Kit, with Sway Bars.

Thanks for all your opinions!

Im not putting coilovers on my ghetto *** civic. & coilover sleeve kits they tend to be just as much for example koni/ground control.

I wonder if I can just cut my springs, i know a guy who did it on his VW and it rode great/ handled great/ and sat at a really good looking ride height. He drove it for years like that and never had a problem. Im not really looking to slam the car on 14 inch rims anyways thats why i suggested the teins. Wondering if i can cut em and bring it down but keep the drop less then 2 inches. Please don't post anything about this if you don't have any beneficial information, i already know and I don't care about the dangers of cutting springs.

Im not to excited about your dropzone springs. But i am interested in searching around for some used lowering springs now!

Im going to start searching around for used springs and struts. If anyone here has anything that they are interested in selling please make a thread and let me know about it.
