Default What headlights to get for my HID's

**NOTE** I have posted this in the "Lighting" thread. Asking here as well to get more feedback **NOTE**

As tittle says. I have a 93 Delsol with JDM one piece headlights. I installed my HID's and they work very well but are not projected out far enough. Just asking if anyone here has HID's in their Delsol and what headlights you guys have. Or what headlights you guys know of that work well with HIDs

Don't want projectors because they are ugly. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You want it to project the light further but you don't want projectors? How does that work?

I know, I know... Projectors are so ugly. My brother dosent have them on his truck and they work amazingly.

We're not talking about a truck now are we? Can't make that kind of comparison. And those plug-n-play HID kits are not designed for projecting light. They disperse it. WIth the design of the Honda headlight housing it makes for pretty wicked glare.

Also if you have a set of those colored lights you actually DECREASE visibility.

why not retrofit some projectors into the oem housing? or just use a projector fog light with hids to make up the difference?

Headlights on different makes of cars just work differently and scatter HID light differently. Honda/Stanley headlamps are just particularly bad at it.

You really need to get a set of morimoto mini projectors.

You're excitement and hype you've built into the HID install only fools you into believing the HID's are better than a good halogen bulb. Even a 4300k HID puts out only marginally more light where you need it without having a projector. If you got 6k-10k HID's you're getting less light over the entire range and it's not focused where it's supposed to be.

I don't know what Super Whites are supposed to signify. What kelvin are the bulbs?

It is dubious that there are any headlight housings that will enhance the projection of plug-and-play HID kits.

I have basically stock style lenses in my 97 ej8 and a 6k kit and it's worlds above halogen. Not to mention I got dual beam and the high beams are amazing. I never have people flash at me so I don't think there is an issue with glare either.

People like to hate on HIDs a lot not sure why though.

Obviously the Del Sol's lenses are smaller and different but maybe you can adjust them a bit? I had to do some adjusting to get the lights to a good level.

6k are not super whites. They actually introduce a fair amount of blue into the spectrum.

Sunlight is 4300k, and the light which human eyes have (through natural selection) have adapted to and see the most in this light range.

Anytime to go higher than 4300k you're getting light the human eye can't see. A 4300k bulb produces ~2200 lumens. 6k ~1700 lumens 8k ~1200 lumens.

A quality halogen bulb like the Phillips Xtreme lineup produce ~1700-2000 lumens of usable light.

And since you have a cheap plug and play kit you're probably getting less than the official ratings since the ballasts are likely not nearly the same quality.

So yes, you're getting a lot less light.

I find it hard to believe that it's way better, let alone, better in the slightest compared to the stock halogens. every single PnP kit i have seen in a 96-00 ej/ek chassis looks like complete ****, has terrible output, and nasty glare. My friend actually tried the lights you're talking about with the "high beam functionality" and they were a joke to put it lightly.

Because of the reasons i mentioned above ^

If you want hid's, do it the correct way. I have retrofits in both my civic's.

G3 style in the ek housing. Now does it look like some kinda squirly transformer in a way, sure it does, but i'd rather have function over form.

morimoto mini h1's in glass eg housings

true that. i think my tsx retrofitted lights are kind of ugly. but the output totally makes up for it. i turn on my lights and people are wtf because they dont expect that out of a 15 yr old civic

I actually like my DDM hid's in my civic. I will say, **** high beams. They are pointless with PNP kits.

But I do want a retro fit.

Does anyone know what the price of retrofitting a pair of 96-98 headlights would be? I've been thinking about doing it, but I'm going to get some HID's for my stock housings and see what they're like first.

Depends on a few things.
Projectors, what HID kit you use, and if you do the work yourself.

Check out the retrofitsource.com

I could easily see 3-500+ if you have someone do it.

I want to do mine with TL projectors.

don't waste your money, they look awful in person. against my suggestion a friend of mine bought some for his stock headlights and they are really bad. light output is scattered and honestly some of the worst glare when either behind you or coming at you down the street.

As a person who drives at night for a living, I can say first hand that Civics and Del Sols with HIDs in halogen housings are the worst offenders for blinding people at night. Yes, you can see better, but it's a big middle finger to EVERYONE ELSE on the road! It ruins others ability to see for 4-5 seconds after you drive past, all because "I don't like the way projectors look"

Do it right, retrofit.

That "We do retrofits!" post was from last freaking year, guys. He might not even log into the forums anymore, thus the full inbox.

PnP kit from theretrofitsource.com: $200. 5 hours of work.

Professional retrofit from the 5 companies I called and asked: $700+
