Default LS/V or GSR?

Hey, I have a 91 Integra LS. My buddy is selling his 93 B17 GSR. I was wondering which would be better, the GSR or LS/V with the GSR head?

If it's close to stock buy his B17 GSR and keep it stock because those things are seriously rare.

That aside, here's my opinion on GS-R vs. LS-V:

If you're going to stay close to stock, LS-V is expensive and it takes a lot of work to get the engine to the same power output as a GS-R and you might be better off just getting a GS-R engine if all you want is VTEC.

However if you're going to get a GS-R engine and then build the bottom end, you might as well keep your LS block and go LS-V, because while you've got the bottom end taken apart for the LS-V conversion you can swap in the exact bottom end you want.

Whatever you do, I'd think twice about parting out a DA GS-R.

IMO, hell yeah. If you wanna do ls/v go waste a B16 head instead of a B17. They're the same thing. (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

And let me have the B17. :D They are teh sex. (And I have a DA so I have much appreciation for them.)

Building an LSVTEC is VERY VERY VERY Expensive. Trust me, you have no idea what you are getting yourself into. Re-building the bottom end WILL require a machine shop to do it for you.

You will need higher compression pistons.

You will need new pumps

If anything, just buy the GSR head off of him. Swapping in a b17 is downgrading.... They are way more torqueless than your LS and you won't enjoy it. Sure, vtec might sound nice, but look at this:

LS torque - 121 ft lbs @ 5000
B17 torqu - 117 ft lbs @ 7000

You have to rev the engine 2000 rpm more for the same torque. Good luck going uphill!

My recommendation - Buy his GSR head only! It is essentially the same as a b16 head but the only difference I think is cams and maybe dual valve springs on the intake side? Dunno.

I think its all about preference and money, (personally gsr over lsv)

overall ill take a gsr anyday over a lsv, even stock gsr to build lsv.

Like what my friend told me one day when i was deciding the same thing, Honda didn't intend to make a lsvtec

Very? How very? It can be but it's a fresh build.

ITR/PR3 pistons are $200
Good VTEC head is like $350-$400
ARP rod bolts/head studs $200
$350 for tune/ecu - street tune will be cheaper
I would also go with a GSR or B16 tranny $450 - or LS gears to save $
Bore/hone/resize bolt $150
Resurface head/leak down test/valve job $200
Bearings $150
OEM pumps, belts/tensioner $325
clutch kit $250
conversion kit $150

It's not that much to build a stock reliable LSV.

B17= torque less in a heavy-*** chassis and it will be old with high miles. So you need to rebuild it anyways.

JDM SiR-G full swap with new water pump/belt. Call it a day.

thats why XSi's DA6-DA8 came with some torqueless b16a, and im still getting in front of Stock DA9 with b18a with my bone stock B16a in my DA8,,,

This! Honda's were built for better fuel economy. Anything can be built and yes nothing is cheap. In the end it's all preference. I've seen many frankenstien builds outlast gsr builds. If you build it right without cutting corners you will be fine.

Go with the B17 unless you feel like doing a full setup (sleeved B20 w/B17 crank+rods)
