Default Spool Valve Assembly removal

I have a 1996 Honda Accord Ex sedan 4 cylinder. I need some advice on how to proceed. I don't have a deep socket set to remove the spool valve as it sits. I'm going to remove the thermostat housing (attached to the lower radiator hose), but I'm not sure if I should just remove the first section closest to the tranny or remove the whole section behind the block. If you are looking at the cylinder head diagram, it's item 9. The goal is to replace the spool valve filter assembly. By removing the thermostat housing, could I reuse the coolant from the system? Thanks.
