Default cracked sleeve during tuning, now i have a question

ok i took my car to get tune last weekend. my set up was a rebuilt motor with itr cams, tuning on hondata.

ok heres the question while tuning. my tuner said the boost was reading 10.8 the whole time and then boom goes my sleeves. my tuner had no idea if it spiked or not. my question is should he have been able to see if boost spoked? or would it have not read it since i was running a stock map sensor?

you should see it in the datalog.

see your datalogs and in the dyno sheet or monitor you're be able to see afr's,boost, rpm etc.

im kinda new to using hondata and dont really know much about it but yeah so since the tuner said the whole time he say my boost at 10.8 and just a glimpse of 10.9 so it means it didnt go higher then that? i was looking at the screen while he was tuning and it showed that my motor was leaning out during vtec it was not crazy but it seems like he could not fix it

14-15* at 10.8 psi it's pretty conservatibe
what do you mean by lean at vtec? have numbers?

yeah agreed i would expect it to be closer to 20 degrees give or take a bit.

it probably overboosted or was running boost greater than the map sensor could read. im assuming its readout would be the max readout of the sensor or about 10.8psi

your really need to tune the car for a few less psi than whatever map sensor its running can read, to allow room for a boost cut feature to be set.

Does your tuner have a lot of experience tuning Hondas/Acuras? It could be timing, boost, or a million other things. There is another thread in here with the same issue. Here is the link:

BINGO...10.8psi is the MAX a stock map sensor can read, so if it was boosting MORE than 10.8 psi, the timing and fuel were the SAME at 10.8 psi as well as 11, 15 or 20 psi if it went that high.

See how that could be bad

Damn. Sounds right on the money. IMO the tuner should have known this.

So the stock MAP doesn't send it into limp mode if it's overpressured?? It just won't read any further??

well for the lean part im not sure but the tuner told me when the screen turns red at where the a/f ratio shows it means its lean and when ever it hit vtec i would see it hit red

and the reason for him being so conservative was that i told him i wanted a conservative tune since i need a reliable car and its my dd

Chances are datalogging wasn't enabled. IF it did record that session to the ECU then you go to the datalog menu up top and select download from ECU. It will show the recorded sessions in there.

Boosting a stock motor doesn't leave much room for error. I cracked a ringland on a stock gsr boosting 7-10psi on a little GT28R (200-240whp) because of the tune/tuner. On my sleeved/forged motor I've lost a vac line on my FPR and leaned out big time in boost. Still have good compression after lots of hard miles.

When tuning on a stock map sensor the boost cut really should of been set at 10psi for safety reason. Boost cut will keep it from going above the readable range.

oh ok wow and he had the boost cut at 11 there goes another mistake he did man life sucks but hey we learn from our mistakes and yeah for the data logging it was not recorded im guessing cause i did what you told me and nothing came up

another question is how come when i try playing with stuff it does not let me make any changes for example launch control?

It will allow you to make any changes if this is an s300 Hondata...just make sure you UPLOAD any changes after you make them

No, it has to do with the way the sensor works. Kind of similar to the idea behind the wastegate, as you push more pressure into the sensor a diaphram gets closer and closer to it's "max" position, which through a type of switch allows a voltage to pass through. The more boost, the more the diaphram is engaged, the more voltage. The stock sensor maxes at 10.8, which means it has used it's total voltage span to communicate with the ECU. (MAP sensors are 0-5V sensors). Once you go beyond the max of the sensor, it continues to read 5V at the ECU. In other words, ECU has absolutely no clue what is going on. Just like if you have a 15psi spring in your wastegate, pushing 18psi doesn't make it open any more. It's already maxed and is doing all it can.

This is why many of us want to see people educate themselves before going turbo. Don't need to necessarily know the why, but knowing that the stock MAP is dead at 10.8psi would have probably saved this guys engine. Live and learn. Best of luck getting everything fixed OP.

yes it is a hondata s300 do i have to have it plugged into the ecu with no cels? it does not let me click any boxes to make changes

thanks for the info and yeah im sure things will be more better this time around since im planning to get my block sleeved with forged internals
