Default fuel line question

Ok so, I want to know if you can skip the whole schabang about hacking off the old nut on the stock hard line coming out of the firewall for the fuel line and just adapt a 6an fitting to it. Is it possible? Or could I even rethread the said nut to make it fit? Trying to keep costs down and do this as simple as possible. Don't want to deal with cutting and reflaring the line.
