Default Transmission Internal Interchangability

I have a lame 4 Spd. in my 91 hatchback. About a year ago I pulled an Si transmission but never used it because the the rear mount had ripped right off. (Head on collision doing 80+, wasn't my car or me driving)

What I'm wondering is could I take the housing/case from my 4 spd. and move the Si drivetrain into my 4 spd. That way I could safely mount it, I don't have a welder, don't know how to weld and don't want it welded to make this work.

Thanks for the help guys!!

Cases should change right over.
However, it may depend on the years - probably won't matter, but it 'may'.
88 is a weirdo year so that's my concern. You didn't say what years your two transmissions were.

BTW: you should consider new shaft and diff bearings and seals while you do this.
Also invest in a set of proper ring pliers to deal with the clip as it's usually a pain with the wrong tools.

I thought the same, but I'm positive that both are 89-91 trannies.

80mph and you were still able to get the trans outta that wreckage?? holy crap.. as far as awitching cases itll work fine. only diff if it was an 88 is the input shaft. otherwise casings wont be an issue

yes, swap the entire Si gearset into the 4-speed case - you will need to use the differential carrier from the 4-speed and bolt the Si ring gear to it since the 4-speed uses the 35mm carrier bearings and the Si uses the 40mm bearings

Cool cool, yea I will start doing this sometime next week or so. I might as well just rebuild this thing since I will have it out. Never rebuilt a tranny before, but I am mechanically inclined to perform one. What would be common seals, bearings, ect to replace since I will have the whole tranny open?

Again thanks for your guys replies.

Yea its pretty crazy. I bought the cars as a parts car from a tow company. The driver who was at the scene said the kid was speeding through the forest, lost control at about 80 mph. Driver broke collar bone, passenger slammed there head through the sunroof and cracked it significantly. (There skull I'm assuming as well)

Thats what you get for being a dumbass. It will never make sense to me. LOL
