i think the coolant temp sensor is on the thermostat housing for the z6. that's how it was for the y8.
it is on the back of the block for the a6. you need to extend the wires to the new sensor if you haven't already.

light blue is the old coolant sensor on the a6/b2

there's the wires for it, hanging off the back of a z6 block. you can fit butt connectors in there if you're too lazy to solder.

here's a pic of the z6 thermostat housing coolant temp plug.

order of the wires shouldn't matter. someone else can verify this.

Actually that's the fan switch (it works independently from the temp gauge), temp gauge is ran off the sensor on the side of the head.

Red = Coolant Temperature Sender (CTS)
Green = Temperature Sending Unit (TSU)
Blue = Radiator Fan Switch (which is located on water outlet on later models)
White = Oil Pressure Sending Unit (in this case idiot light switch)

The order of the wires on all the two wire switches/sensors above does not matter.

Put a paperclip in the connector and turn your ignition to 'ON'.
Fan come on?
It should.
If it does, then skip to the next paragraph, but if it doesn't then you will need to do a continuity check.
Check both wires (individually) in the switch connector for continuity to ground.
One of them should get a solid ground - if not, then check your grounds (the thermostat grounds might have the ground for this).
If you find that you have a good ground, then hook up a jumper wire to the relay wire in the switch connector and jump it to ground (igntion 'ON').
This other wire goes to your relay.
Fan should come on.
If not, check relay.

(the next paragraph)
Do a continuity check while testing the fan switch in some boiling water.
It should be testing 'open' before heating and 'closed' after being heated.
Even though it's new, it might be bad.
